French authorities in tha vast
new Sahara oil fields are step
ping up security precautions
against sabotage by terrorists of
the Secret Arm; Organization.
' The French were gravely per
turbed by the recently reported
theft of 15 tons of high explo
sives in the heart of the deso
late oilfields.
The explosives were on two
trucks which disappeared on a
routine trip through the desert.
Their drivers had disappeared.
It is not known whether they
were kidnaped or joined the
Secret Army.
The trucks contained enough
explosives to do- irreparable
damage to tha oil Installations.
The only highway leading out
of the oil iield area is under
tight security control, so it
teemed likely the explosives
could have been taken north for
the Secret Army's sabotage cam
paign in the coastal cities.
French officials (eared extrem
ists among the hundreds of
Europeans working in and
around the oil fields may be
holding the explosives in readi
ness for a kind of "scorched
earth" campaign, if and when
Algeria becomes independent
Saboteurs working with the
technical know-bow of oil ex
perts could make tha vast un
derground petroleum reserves
of Hassi Messaoud virtually un
exploi table.
The oil field, discovered in
the heart of the desert 550
miles south of Algiers in 1956,
has 121 producing wells spread
over 1,000 square miles. They
pump more than 800,000 metric
tons of oil into the pipeline to
the coast every month. This is
about a quarter of the entire
French oil consumption. The to
tal reserves, estimated at 2.5
billion metric tons, are suffici
ent to cover all French needs
for more than 85 years.
The European engineers and
technicians operating the wellj,
refinery and pipeline are most
ly from metropolitan France.
They seem more interested in
their pay envelopes and job se
curity than In the Secret Army's
terrorist campaign. They sym
pathize with the demand to keep
Algeria French but not to
the point of destroying their
own livelihood.
They receive relatively high
pay and are eoaitorUb!y in
stalled in luxurious camps com
plete with air conditioning,
swimming pools and ultra-modern
movie houses. Gardens and
trees have been planted in this
man-made oasis, and the peace
ful atmosphere is a startling
contrast to the tension and bit
terness in Ibe jiorihern cities.

cret Army'a terror campaign

not been a single case ot mur
der or sabotage in Hassi Mes
saoud. "Most of the technicians here
are sympathetic to the Secret
Army, one of them said. "But
they will not resort to sabotage
at least not for the moment.

when some may be thrust into
acts of despair if, for example,
