Smoking Blamed
For Smaller Babies
WASHINGTON Wl A gov
ernment researcher laid Thurs
day a recent study shows that
women who smoke during preg
nancy are more likely to have
smaller babies whose health is
impaired.
Dr. Richard Maaland, head of
the National Institute of Neuro
logical Diseases and Blindness,
told a Senate Appropriations
subcommittee about the results.
He was supporting his agency's
request for $71,206,000 in ap
propriations for the year start
ing July 1.
He conceded that some per
sons have questioned whether
smoking was the cause, but said
the study shows that "the wom

Lumbermen
Set Meeting
What may be the largest
group of lumbermen ever to
gather on the West Coast will
meet in Portland April 19 at the
Multnomah Hotel to consider
a lumber grade simplification
and standardization program.
H. V. Simpson, manager of
the West Coast Lumber Inspec
tion Bureau, said Thursday he
expects between 400 and 500
lumber manufacturers present.
They will come from the Doug
las fir producing regions of Ore
gon, Washington and California.
The proposition, which has
been studied by a committee
which includes N. B. Giustina
of Eugene, is to change several
grade names, consolidate sever
al grades, attach a new grade
to some materials being used
for new products.
Simpson said the aim is to
take confusion out of lumber
marketing and promotion in
order to compete more success
fully with other building materials.
tent that the health of the baby
be impaired."
He said a study of 7,500 preg
nancies this year part . of a
long term study of 50,000 ex
pectant mothers and their
babies "has linked prematurity
to smoking during pregnancy.
Prematuring, which has long
been recognized as an important
factor in prenatal problems, is
usually defined in terms of
birth weight
"In this study, birth weight
decreased proportionally to the
number of cigarettes smoked
daily during pregnancy."
Sen. Lister Hill, D-Ala., chair
man of the subcommittee, asked
for further details, which led
Masland into a discussion of
challenges to the finding.
"Some raise the question that
it is not the smoking which
causes the trouble but the type
of woman involved, Masland
said. "The only way to answer
this is to get some women who
smoke to stop smoking and co
operate in a study.
"We would itake a group of
pregnant women, half of them
having quit smoking, and fol

study."
