Weill 'king P'cture grouping of framed rcpro
ductions and original paintings highlights this
.LGCOr Oriental-influenced room setting. Instead of
hanging pictures separately, group small pic
tures together on one wall to create a decorat
ing center of interest.
Grouped Pictures Add Charm to Rooms
Slop hanging pictures nn
walls so that they look like mis
placed postage stamps.
Improperly hung pictures will
create havoc in a room setting
quicker than you can say
"Modigliani."
Probably the commonest
fault in hanging pictures, re
ports the Picture and Frame
Institute, is to place one small
picture on a big wall. Needless
to say, you'll soon need a pair
nt binoculars to locate that
cherished art masterpiece.
The best way ot solving the
picture hanging problem is to
lake slock of your present as
sets. You'll probably discover
that you have quite a few small
pictures scattered around the
room.
Stifle that tendency to leave
them where they are because
you can't stand a bare wall,
and plan instead to group the
pictures together on one wall.
Whereas one picture on a wall
can be a liability, a grouping
of several pictures can be a
striking decorative asset. Keep
in mind, however, that the suc
cess of most picture groupings
depends on how well they are
Hints From Heloise
Dear Hclnise:
I havt literally ruined my favorite orlon sweater by
carelessly tossing it in the washing machine with other
clothes, and now it has little black knots all over it. They
will not brush off. Can you help me?
HOMEMAKER
Dear Mrs. Lewton:
It might make you feel good to know that many people
make this mistake. Just not being the only one helps,
doesn't it?
Well, the only answer we have is to take your husband's
razor and CAREFULLY shave 'cm off! Lots of people shave
sweaters!
Now ... I don't push advice down anyone's throat, but
I do send a hint this time. (After I got knots on my own
sweater!) I have learned to turn a sweater wrong-side-out
and button it up hefore ever washing it. Thus, the outside
doesn't rub against other materials, which causes these knots.
HELOISE
Dear Heloise:
An easy way to keep socks together when washing or lo
keep straps from wrapping themselves around everything in
the washing machine, and In protect all lingerie, is In put
these "trouble makers" in a bag made very simply of two
dish cloths.
Buy the type of dish cloths that are made of loosely woven
threads. Such a cloth lets plenty of suds and rinse water
get inside.
To make the bag, stitch two cloths together nn three
sides so that it will look like a sack. It is usually best to
stitch these sides several times so they will be secure.
On the open side (or top of bag) slitch a hem about one
inch deep. Turn the bag inside out so thai the seams will
he on the Inside, and run a drawstrong through the top.
Your washing machine bag is finished, ready for months of
Service. ,
Actually, Hclnise, it almost lakes longer lo tell how lo
make one than the time it takes lo make it. I can make a bag
during the time it lakes for one long TV commercial.
NANCY H.
Pear Folks:
I now possess three of these hags. In one I put my
nylons from day lo day. Each week end I just throw the
entire hag In the machine.
Another bag holds husband's sox.
The third bag holds head lettuce! When I am having
company for dinner and want the lettuce real crisp, 1 just
dampen the bag and place the head of letluce in it. It's great.
Also absorbs that excess water from the lettuce.
HELOISE
Dear Heloise:
After washing my tennis shoes in the washing machine,
I spray them with thin starch.
This puis a Ihin film over the cloth and prevents the soil
from clinging to the fabric. The insides are still soft and at
comfortable as can be.

NEW YORK fOPD Dangerous
waters always have challenged
Georgie White in the same way
Mt. Everest always has chal
lenged mountain climbers.
As a result, Mrs. White boasts
that she is the first person ever
to "run" the rapids and cata
racts of the Colorado River
without portage.
Today, a lithe, handsome and
vigorous woman of 51, she has
"lost count" of the number of
times she has traversed the Col
orado's hazardous course on a
330-mile run from Lee's Ferry,
125 miles north of Flagstaff,
Ariz., to Temple Bar, Ariz.,
where Lake Mead begins.
Mrs. White since 1951 has
piloted passenger boat tours on
a course which includes about
195 miles of treacherous rapids
and cataracts.
"Experts vary in estimating
the number of rapids," she con
tinued, in an interview. "They
run from 200 to 400. Of course,
it depends on what you call a
rapid. To me, it has to be a
mighty surge of water ... I
know the Colorado so well by
now."
Winter Realtor
Mrs. White, the wife of a re
tired transit worker, lives in
Los Angeles during the winter
months where she and her
sister, a school teacher, operate
a real estate business.
From early April through
September, however, she is the
pilot-navigator of the "Georgie
White" boats, which actually
are Navy surplus ncophrene
rafts.
The cruises last either 12 or
17 days, include stops along the
way for hiking and overnight
camping, and run either the full
330 miles or just the "smooth
part" which is Glen Canyon.
Mrs. White is consultant to
Johnson Motors on the use of
powered craft in rough waters
and came to New York this
week for the start of the an
nual National Motor Boat Show.
She said she uses two sizes of
rafts. One is nine feet wide, 17
feet long; the other, nine feet
wide and 30 feet long, ln each
case, she hitches three of the
rafts together broadside with
nylon rope to provide the pas
sengers a safe journey through
the formidable waters. She said
she never has had an accident.
Shouts Order
"The first day down stream,
when we approach the first rap
ids, I yell, 'Hold on, everybody,'
and you can see passengers sit
ting there frozen . . . wide-eyed
and scared," she said.
"After that, they can hardly
wait for the next ones."
Mrs. White said, "I think
people enjoy this sport because
it gets them completely away
from everyday problems . . .
back to rugged living. And
there aren't too many things
you can do these days to gel
away from civilization."
Mrs. White, a native of Chi
cago, has had few dull moments
in her life. During the Depres
sion of the 1930s, she bicycled
from New York to Los Angeles
"just to see the country." She
used to belong to Chicagos
Polar Bear Club whose mem
bers brave the ice of Lake Mich
igan for winter swims. She
says:
"I always have liked the out
door life . . especially the
water."
Diet Hint
Studies of American diets
show that calcium and ribofla
vin (one of the B vitamins) are
the two nutrients that most oft
en fall short. Milk is richer in
both these nutrients than any
other food.
