Sukarno's Threats Backed by Military Superiority

Co., says the Bend, Ore., area
would make an Ideal site for
tests on Earth of astronauts
and equipment slated to make
a flight to the Moon.
The area is rich in volcanic
materials and offers terrain
similar to that Green believes
will be found on the Moon. He
said he thinks much of the
Moon's surface is of volcanic
origin.
The Galapagos Island would
offer the same conditions, Green
said. He said the Bend area
could be used to check out
equipment for a manned lunar
expedition and the Galapagos
Islands could be a final test
area for expedition members.

Sukarno's military advisers
teem reluctant about war now
but not because they fear defeat
in the swampy, mosquito-infested
territory of New Guinea,
foreign diplomats believe.
The military would rather
wait until later in the year
when, they feel, they could have
a victory as clean as that of the
Indian armed forces in Goa.
But if Sukarno gave the orders
now, there is no suggestion that
the military would waver.
Latest reports from Indone
sian military sources and diplo
mats give this line-up of present
military strength:
ARMY: Sukarno has 130 bat
talions of regular troops, one
half operational, one half terri
torial. There are 800 to 1,100
men to an Indonesian battalion.
Thirty of the 65 operational
battalions have been fully
trained in amphibious landings.
Sukarno also has scores of thou
sands of volunteers who went
into training camps last week
end. NAVY: The Indonesian fleet
has 4 destroyers, 10 Soviet mo
tor torpedo boats, 8 West Ger
man motor torpedo boats, 8
American landing ship trans
ports and 6 submarines.
Four of the subs, long-range
"W" class vessels of 1,030 tons
displacement carrying 14 tor-
pedos each, arrived from the
Soviet Union last Monday, the
very day of the Dutch-Indonesian
naval engagement off the
coast of West New Guinea.
Two subs of the same type
were delivered by the Soviets in
August 1859.
Indonesian naval personnel
are in training in Sevastopol to
man a cruiser. Yugoslavia has
announced it has started supply
ing Indonesia with naval craft.
Delivery of 10 more Soviet tor
pedo boats is expected to take
place soon.
AIR FORCE: The Soviet Un
ion has delivered 10 long-range
TU16 jet bombers and is re
portedly in the process of de
livering 25 more. Indonesia has
20 Ilyushin-28 light jet bomb
ers. The fighter squadrons are
made up of 40-60 Soviet-built
MIG 17s and 19s. The Air Force
also has 8 U.S. C130s, each cap
able of carrying 80 90 troops.

numbering about 5.000-7,000.
The Dutch have one big fac
tor on their side the swampy,
under-populated terrain of West
New Guinea virutally defends
itself. It lies nearly 1.000 miles
from the South Celebes which
Sukarno has designated as head
quarters of any attack on West
New Guinea.
Sukarno's present military su
periority rests on the apparent
reluctance of The Netherlands
to reinforce its military position
in New Guinea. However,
Dutch officials have been quot
ed as stating that if necessary
the aircraft carrier Karel Dor
mann, now on a flag showing
tour of the West Indies, could
be sent to West New Guinea
waters.
The imponderable In the

over the territory is the reac
tion of Holland's friends, Au

begin Wednesday and continue
