ing bags, and waterproof maps of the
main canoe routes. All this is inex
pensive, and it's high adventure, too.
Adirondack Forest Preserve, N. Y.
Most campers find it hard to believe that
this splendid bit of upside-down coun
try still remains so undeveloped so
close to all the Eastern centers of pop
ulation. Actually more than half the
citizens of America live within a day's
drive of this preserve, via turnpike
traveling. A number of camp sites are .
available except during August when
the demand is heavy.
Glacier National Park, Mont. Just
to drive across Going-to-the-Sun High
way through Glacier is a memorable
experience, but to camp in the park is
even more rewarding. Besides the mag
nificent scenery, there's good fishing, a
vast network of hiking and riding trails,
good pack-tripping deeper into the high
country, and abundant wildlife to study.
Other scenic areas are within easy driv
ing in Montana (Flathead Lake, Bob
Marshall Wilderness) as well as in Brit
ish Columbia and Alberta.
Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Mid
. westerners have long known about this
cool and scenic portion of Michigan
surrounded by the Great Lakes. But
with the new Straits of Mackinac
Bridge, it's available to anyone. The
state has numerous campgrounds, and '
camping rights can be obtained on
many private lands for a small fee. The
Peninsula has hundreds of lakes with
good fishing. The iron and copper ports
along the Superior shore line are inter
esting. And Isle Royale National Park
in Lake Superior must be reached from
here.
Lassen Volcanic National Park,
Calif. California's other parks (Yosem
ite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon) are far
better known, but Lassen is an "undis
covered" bonanza for serious campers.
It's an excellent outdoor laboratory to
study geology and the structure of the
earth. Extensive hiking trails lead to
fishing lakes and vast sweeps of high
country created by erupting volcanoes.
Other fine facilities exist in National
Forest lands just adjacent
Padre Island, Tex. Here's an un
broken strip of land similar to Hat
teras at the extreme southern tip of
Texas from Corpus Christ! to Port
Isabel. It offers unlimited camping but
only one established camp site, at the
southern end. Excellent fishing is avail
able in Brazos Santiago Pass and in the
Laguna Madre all year long. This is
also a top-notch shell-collecting area,
and there are many spots of interest
nearby in the Rio Grande Valley.
Custer Slate Park, S. Dak. In their
'haste to reach more celebrated regions
farther west, Eastern vacationers hurry
past the Black Hills, where much his
tory was made and where campers can

have the time of their lives. It's great
country for hiking and riding. There's
good fishing in a number of lakes, and
buffaloes still roam at large here. Also
in the vicinity are the famous Mount
Rushmore stone carvings and the color
ful gold towns of Lead and Deadwood.
Any list of good camping areas must

matchless area of natural beauty abound
ing with wildlife, but extremely crowd

National Park, exquisite mountain
country, but often quite crowded; Uin
ta Mountains, Utah, with more than
1,000 lakes; strange Crater Lake, Ore.,
and surrounding National Forest lands;
Olympic National Park, Wash., and sur
