Four charity organizations have
been selected to receive funds
from the Campus Chest drive
scheduled this week at the Uni
versity of Oregon, according to
Calvin M. Jensen of Boise, Idaho,
chairman of the drive.
A committee nf Graduate stu
dents and seniors in the sociology Mahlon-Sweet Airport. Eugene,
department at the university
picked these four charities: the
National Scholarship Service for
Negro Students, Pearl Buck
School, Lane County Medical Re
search Assn., and tjie Community
Food Bank program.
In the past, Campus Chest
funds were'-turned over to Lane
County United Appeal, but the
selection of only four agencies
was initiated "this year to give
academic endorsement to the
charities and to make student do
nations more meaningful.
The Campus Chest is one of
only two fund drives held on the
university campus each year. The
other, World University Service,
collects funds for academic aid to
foreign countries.

Rural School
Board Votes
For Two Bills
The Lane County Rural School
District Board went on record
Monday in favor of two bills pend
ing in the Legislature, and op
posed a third.
Members of the board asked
Supt. Dale Parnell to write the
Lane County delegation, express-
ing support for Senate Bill 447.
The bill calls for simplification
of school fund distribution, and
integration of all state, county and
rural school district funds into a
single finance program.
Tha board also favors a pro
posal introduced by Sen. Robert
Straub, D-Eugene, that would es
tablish a youth camp, allowing
boys to spend the summer work
ing with the state forestry de
The board opposed House Bill
1354, relating to the county school
fund. The bill would authorize a
levy for school purposes upon tax
able property.ln a county (this is
now mandatory; the bill would
make it voluntary). It would also
authorize appropriation of funds
from non-tax sources, such as
O&C lands and forest reserves.
In other matters, the board
authorized Parnell to work with
W. P. Riddlesbarger, Eugene at
torney, on school matters requir
ine legal advice.
Parnell reminded the board
that a nublic hearing on the coun
ty school superintendent's operat
ing budget lor laei-oz wouia oe
held at 1:30 p.m. March 6, in the
suDerintendent's office. A Duag-
et of $87,385 has been approved
bv the county school district
hudeet committee.
Members of the county board
are Milton Turay, chairman; Ray
Holcomb, Mrs. Laura Johnson,
Mrs. Robert Leeper, Joe Richards,
Waldo Taylor and Maurice E.
Whittaker.
