Crowell Nabs
First in Race
Spectators at the Eugene
Speedway saw one of the top
races of the season Sunday when
local hardtops tangled with road
sters from Oregon and Washing
ton.
The one main race of the day
was a 25-lap contest won by
Palmer Crowell's roadster in
9:38.74. Close behind was a road
ster driven by Frankie McGowcn
of Salem and third was Jerry
uundin, Bothell, Wash., in an
other roadster.
The yellow flag was out for
several minutes during the main
event when a car spun out on the
north turn and forced Marvin
While over the bank in order to
avoid a collision.
Next week the hardtops will be
out in force again when the
Emerald Empire Kiwanis Club
will sponsor the races with the
proceeds going to the Pearl Buck
Hospital School.
Time trials for the hardtops
Sunday ranged from 21:99 to
23:58 seconds. Fast time was
driven by Jim "Chief Crazy-
Horse Baxlcy and was a new
hardtop track record.

. RECREATION PARK, Wenatchee In a fist-flinging
brawl, the second of two rhubarbs here Monday night,
Eugene's Emeralds collected eight runs in a big fifth inning
to walloo the Wenatchee Chiefs 10-1. .
The largest crowd of the season, partially attracted by Jhe antics
of Jackie Price.' watched George Storti handcuff the erstwhile
Northwest Baseball League powerhouse with five hits for the right
hander's sixth win of the season. The 3,037 fans saw their unlets
drop from the league lead for
the first time this season, as the
Emeralds took over a percentage
advantage.
Bob Roberts, Chunky right
hander who was looking for his
12th win of the season, instead
suffered his sixth loss. He held

four innings despite giving up
four of the 11 bases on balls he
merited during the game. His
four walks in the fifth were in
strumental in Eugene's big in
ning.
FIRST RUCKUS
Storti didn't put a man on base
until the fourth on his first
walk to lead off the inning. Dick
Watson then bunted down the
firstbase line and on the sacrifice
Hal Toso tagged Watson not too
gently resulting in the first
ruckus. But the payoff came in
the fifth.
Roberts started the inning by
hitting George Matilc and then
Whitey Thomson beat out a
scratch single on an attempted
bunt. Ted Heese walked to fill
the bases. Storti fanned, but Ron
Jackson came through with a two-
run double that proved to be the
light that started the explosion.
Art Preston walked and then
Granny Gladstone popped out.
Dick Hayes walked to fill the.
bases and George Matile walked
to force in another run.
Matile, up for the second time
in the inning, singled to short,
.scoring Preston. Hayes, also at
tempting to score, was caught at
the plate for what would have
been the final out but he threw
a blockbuster at Bob Duretto and
the catcher dropped the ball.
It was a good, hard, clean
play, but players and other per
sonnel rushed from both dugouts
to become entangled in the melee.
One Wenatchee player was felled,
but most of the punches were
blocked. Umpires Runyon and
Kelly managed to quell the riot
and when the dust settled all the
bases were empty. But it was
ruled that Matile would have to
return to second base with only
seven runs scored there were nd
ejections.
Thomson came to bat again
and was safe on another of We
natchee's four errors, Matile scor
ing. Hesse grounded out to end
the inning with Roberts surviv
ing the 12-man assault.
CHIEFS THREATEN '
Wenatchee threatened in the
bottom of the fifth when Duretto
opened with a single the first hit
off Storti. Jim Moore hit into a
double play. Vanni then blasted
out a double, but held third oh
Herb Anderson's single. Roberts
popped out to end the inning with
out a tally.
Only Wenatchee run came in
the seventh when Moore walked
and scored behind Vanni's second
straight two-bagger.
