Needs Viewed
' More Dasture. silaefi and hav
may be the big need in Oregon
if farmers and ranchers are 'to
take greatest advantage of in
creasing feed grain supplies, says
M. D. Thomas, agricultural econ
omist at Oregon State College.
In the latest "Agricultural Sit
uation and Outlook" circular pre
pared at OSC, the economist ex
plains that, in time, most of this
grain will move to market
through livestock. And most live
stock requires forage in some
form.
In the past, Oregon and the
Northwest have been long on
forage and short on feed grain,
says Thomas. Now the balance
is changing rapidly. Nearly 300,
000 acres in Oregon and almost
900,000 additional acres in neigh
boring states that were produc
ing wheat 2 years ago are now
producing barley. Several thous
and more acres are producing
oats and corn. Similar increases
Jn feed grain production are oc
"curring in other Western states.
Meanwhile, Oregon's hay acre
age has barely held its own and
this year's acreage in the North
west is expected to be less than
2 per cent larger than 2 years
ago. Unless water supplies east
of the Cascades turn out better
than seem likely at present, Ore
gon probably will have one of
the smallest hay crops on record.
At the same time, forage-consuming
animals have been in
creasing while grain consumers
have shown little change.
Breaking these figures down,
the economist points out that in
the season ahead, with an even
break from the weather, there
will be a. supply of more than
1,800 pounds of feed grain per
animal in the state. That is
twice as much as 2 years ago.
And there is plenty more in ad
joining stales, not to mention the
surplus wheat crowding storage.
In contrast, the supply of hay
pin the year is not likely to ex
ceed 2,800 pounds per unit of
hay-eating livestock. That is
about 400 pounds less than was
available two years ago and 600
pounds less than the average.
Copies of the "Agricultural Sit
uation and. Outlook" circular are
available from county extension
offices and OSC.
