After Admitting Thefts
CORVALLIS IW Three Cor-
vallis police officers were fired
Wednesday after they admitted
stealing items from a store dur
ing an investigation.
. Police Chief Cecil Fruitt said
the three took merchandise with
a total value of $57.60 from the
Montgomery Ward store after
finding the door open Sunday
nignt.
Dismissed were Noble C. Stew
art, 28; A. E. Bodeker, 41, and
James H. Gundy Jr., 32. Stewart
had been on the force three years
and Bodeker and Gundy six years
eacn.
The officers pleaded guilty in
, District Court to charges of petty
" larceny and were fined $30 and
paroled from 90 day jail sentenc
es. Most valuable item taken was a
skillsaw worth $54.95. Other
items taken included a file, flash
light batteries and three boxes
of .22 caliber shells. Fruitt said
the three admitted the theft when
confronted with the evidence.

Objectors Sentenced
PORTLAND (IP) Two con
scientious objectors were sen
tenced to six months in prison
in Federal Court here Wednes
day for draft evasion. They were
Gale Hallett, 21-year-old Jeho
vah's Witness from Portland and
Albert Stain, 27-year-old Salem
member of the Church of God.
Judge Claude McColloch al
lowed Stain to remain free on
bail after his attorney, G. Bern
hard Fedde, said he would appeal.
Damage Suit Filed
PORTLAND OPI An $86,500
damage suite has been filed in
Federal Court here by the widow
and daughter of a Medford man
killed in a sawmill accident last
December. The suit was filed by
Mrs. Mildred Dunford, and her
daughter, Kay, against the Med
ford corporation.
Norman Dunford, 59, was
killed whiie operating an edger.
A chunk of wood was thrown
against his chest and abdomen
when the edger fouled.
Reduction Approved
SALEM Wl Public Utilities
Commissioner Charles H. Heltzel
gave Pacific Power & Light Co.
permission Wednesday to reduce
its rates. The reduction, effective
next Friday, amounts to S242.000
a year in the company's Coos Bay
division, and $60,000 in the Wil
lamette Valley.
Heltzel said the reductions are
a result of the company's merger
with Mountain States Power Co.

Chinese Leader Dies
PORTLAND ( Mrs. Stanley
Chin, 58, a leading figure in Chi
nese women's affairs here for
many years, died Tuesday.
She was a leader of the Port
land League of Women Voters,
formed the first Chinese Girl
Reserves unit in the YWCA here
some 20 years ago, and had lec
tured extensively in Oregon on
Chinese affairs. '
Mrs. Chin was born Feb. 18,
, 1897', at Vancouver, Wash. Her
grandfather, Scid Back, contract
ed a large part of the Chinese la
bor for Northwest and , Alaska
canneries in the latter part of the
19th century.
Norblad Urges
Burial of Ship

at Guam during the war and is
still at the Pacific island. Nor
blad said the cost of towing the
hull to Portland had been ex

The Oregon Republican, in a
letter to Rear Admiral W. D.
Leggett, Chief of the Navy's Bu
reau of Ships in Washington,
urged that the admiral take ap
propriate action and arrange for
the Oregon's burial, "with appro
priate patriotic ceremonies."
