in order to assure the blessings

sacrificing and risking much to
protect liberty. We must therefore
make sure that the liberty which
we are prepared to defend at
great cost is true liberty," He
added:
'FEAIt ONLY GOD'
"That means a liberty which
uses and develops those gifts with
which man was endowed by his
Creator. ...
"The freedom of which we talk
docs not mean the right to live
I selfishly. It means that men in
stead of having to fear other men
need fear only God. It means the
right freely to pattern one's life
in accordance with the dictates
of moral law. That is the law
which enjoins upon us the golden
rule."
'PRODUCT OF MANY'
"Peace is the product of many
wills, and not merely of one alone.
In the past it has been necessary
to foregon peace in order to as
sure the blessings of liberty. We
dare not be blind to the fact that
that may happen again."
The convocation, attended by
3,600, honored presidents of the
31 Negro colleges that are mem
bers of the united fund. It was
held on the eve of a campaign to
raise 1 million dollars, a sum
estimated to cover about 10 per
cent of the colleges educational
budgets.

Cottage, the group brought its
membership to 34 by inducting
Donald A. Crumley, .Goshen;
Charles and Margaret Wells, Eu
gene; Lcland DeJean, bpring-
field; and Jasper and Odett Hills,
Springfield.
The group heard reports on
forthcoming flights (and saw
movies about flying. Appointed
to the food committee for next
month's meeting were Rosemaric
Stolsig and Odett Hills.
Funds Increased
For Forest Service

crease of $1,083,000 in the bud
get requests for funds for the
Department of Agriculture for
est service was approved by the
House Appropriations Commit
tee Monday.
The increase for state and
private forest cooperation,
brought the recommended appro
priation for the year beginning
July 1 for that purpose to $10,
683,690, the same as for this
year. President Eisenhower's
budget had requested $9,600,000.

10-YEAR MAXIMUM
Guizado, who denied the
charges, faces a maximum pen
alty of 10 years in prison if con
victed. Votes of 36 of the 53 As
sembly members are required for
conviction.
If freed, Guizado is entitled to
reassume the presidency.
' Miro will be tried with 3 alleged
accomplices before an ordinary
court of law, probably in April
or May.
Guizado's attorneys have moved
for postponement of his trial, con
tending they have not had enough
time to gather evidence. The com
mission on proceedings estab
lished by the Assembly for the
hearing was reported ready to ask
for denial of the request Monday.
In advance of the Assembly
hearing, prosecutor Jose N. Lasso
de la Vega said he has "real, sub
stantial" evidence against Guiz
ado. He charged the killing of Re
mon was motivated by greed and
a thirst for power.
Guizado's attorney Felipe Juan
Escobar countered "there is not
enough evidence even to indict"
He termed the proceedings "uri'
constitutional and prompted by
political motives.
Remon had been a power be
hind the scenes for more than a
decade, serving as chief of the
national police, prior to his elec
tion as president in May, 1952.
