Put Out 2 Blazes
Two small fires were extin
guished by the Springfield Fire
Department Saturday afternoon.
Firemen were called at 1:08
p.m. to put out a roof fire at the
home of James T. Bible, 942 East
N St. The blaze was caused by
sparks from a defective flu, fire
men said. Damage to the roof
was slight. '
At 4:40 pjn. firemen put out
a grass fire in a vacant lot at
1221 Q St., near North Gate
Homes. The blaze was brought
under control before it reached

ed for death at the hands of a

Defense Minister Marshal Leonid
Govorov, one of the S Soviet
leaders who were reported
marked for death in Russia's so
called "doctors' plot," died Sat
urday. The death of the defender of
Leningrad and one of Russia's
outstanding artillery experts, was
announced by Radio Moscow in a
broadcast monitored here.
Moscow Radio said the mar
shal died after "a prolonged and
grave illness."
In January, 1933, Marshal
Govorov was named as one of
the 5 high officers of the Soviet
army who were supposedly slat
Stalin accused of treason.
Oplomelrist
that two of "a group of agents
of the American Secret Service,"
convicted of espionage, have been
sentenced to death.
The Polish official news agency,
PAP, said, in a broadcast mon
itored here, that the district mili
tary court of Warsaw had pro
nounced the sentences.
The accused were Jerzy Lews
zecki and Jozef Babiarz. The
broadcast described Babiarz as a
deserter from the Polish army
"who went over to the enemy and
carried on espionage work."
The "doctors' plot" was ex
ploded and the doctors were ex
onerated after Stalin's death.
Moscow Radio said Govo'rov's
funeral would be held in Mos
cow's mammouth Red Square.
The date was not announced.
