Ski Winner
NORTHFIFXTr VI III Fact.
ern collegiate 4111181 Larry Da
mon, 21-year-old University of
Vermont senior, won the Natinnnl
Collegiate Ski Championship cross
country race Saturday in a 47
lad from Burlington, Vt., Damon
man neia.
A red-cheeked, crew-haircut
nosed out Dave Shaw of the Uni
versity of Denver in the good
time of 54 minutes, 10 and two-
tenths seconds over a soft fill
and dale course of about nine
miles.
Denver, defending its NCAA
title won last year at Reno, Nev,
pulled into a good lead at the
end of the second of the four-
event meet. The Western squad
piled up 189.875 points to 183.917
for Dartmouth.
The University of New Hamp
shire was third with 183.916 and
the University of Colorado fourth
with 182.483 points after the
downhill and cross country races.
Slalom and jumping will be held
Sunday.
Damon is beaming his skiing
program towards the 1956 Olym
Dics and seemed assured after
Saturday's race to be on the U. S.I
squad.
Erik Berggren of Oslo, Norway,
and the University of Idaho, fin
ished third behind Damon and
Shaw. He and teammate Reider
Ullevalsteer, who finished eighth,
were the lone competitors from
their school. I
Berggren, tops in the Pacific
Northwest delegation, had a time
of 54:51.3. Standings of other
Northwest skiers: Reider Ulleval
steer, Idaho, 8th in 58:38.2;
Sverre Wegge, Washington State
College, 10th in 59:20.1; Mads
Danielsen of Washington State,
11th in 59:47.5; Bruno Righter of
Washington State, 14th in 60:13.8.
In the team standings, WSC
placed sixth with a total of
178.466 points, and the University

(Continued from Page 1-C)
and prior to that, a few years ago, played in the Armory during
a doubleheader involving Georgetown and another foe. . , .
Farrington says, "That crowd the place generally is packed
to capacity has an inevitable effect on the officials. It would
take a particularly strong-minded and strong-willed official not
to bend under the constant haranguing of the highly partisan
crowd.
"The ethics of the crowd is reflected from the bench. Why,
State's Everett Case was off the bench yelling at the offiicals
and his players all night." Other conditions at the game included:
Constant booing of the officials and GW players, particularly
during freethrows, and invective directed at the GW bench. . . .
Both officials wished Case good luck, but had nothing to say to
Reinhart. ... As in GW's loss to West Virginia the previous
Saturday, the Colonials outscored the Wolfpack from the floor
but lost by nine. ...
North Carolina State, by the way, is not in the good graces
of the NCAA and not eligible for the playoffs and therefore
will be competing in the National AAU at Denver. . . . Adolph
Rupp of Kentucky is well aware of home-court advantages, too.
ir Bob Santee, former Oregon baseballer, will coach the
Quantico Marines this spring, according to our Washington
operative, Lt, Don Fair. . . . Santee, a regular captain in the
Marines, played third for the Pearl Harbor Marines and acted as
coach last year. ...
Fair has found a-substitute for Oregon's John Kakananui, if
the ace Webfoots' statistician finds his job as an architect too
pressing to help with basketball and football. . . . Don has a staff
sergeant who keeps the scorebook, tabulates rebounds, and shots,
assists, a running score, records ties, lead changes, etc. ... He
also acts as a publicity man for the Andrews team and corre
sponds for three Washington papers and three TV stations. . . .
The question has recently been asked What ha happened
to three Webfoots who were potential varsity hoopsters this win
ter Fred Jacobs, Kent Dorwin and John Foster? . . . Foster
dropped out of school because of grades, Dorwin quit the squad
and Jacobs, the 440-yard Northern. Division track champ and
football end, never turned out for basketball because of the
"miseries," and later flunked out, although he came to Oregon
on a basketball scholarship. . . .
Jacobs is only one of the potential first-place track point win
ners missing from Bill Bowerman's Webfoot cinder squad. . . .
Doyle Higdon, javelin thrower, was killed in an accident; Frank
Morris, a hurdler, is just recovering from polio, and Bud Keck,
shot-putter, is suffering from arthritis. . . . Bill will have a fair
to middlin' Oregon squad anyway . . . Maybe Dick James will
share his football with track. . . . Did you see his fine trampoline
performance during halftime a week ago despite a cast on his
wrist?
ic Golf is fun! You can say that again and again as far
as any divot event scheduled by the Rogue Valley Country
Club of Medford is concerned. The Pearpickers really roll out
the welcome 'carpet whenever Manager George Harrington sched
ules a tourney, and the $2,000 Oregon Open March 25-27 will be
no exception. . . . The pro prize will attract many of the North
west and Northern California money men, with an added $400 lap
money offered. . . . The amateur prizes total $750 in value, but
the big thing is the hospitality. . . . There is a daily hole-in-one
contest for a $3,000 auto, too. ...
Eugene will be well represented by amateurs like Sid Milli-,
gan, George Lynch, Sam Mock, Al Erickson and Verne Allen
in the play-for-fun ranks. . . . Pros to be on hand will include
Ken Omlid of Cottage Grove, Wendy Wood of Eugene Country
Club, and Harold West and Harvey Hixson of Laurelwood. . . .
There will be a pro-amateur Thursday before the tourney
proper gets under way. In addition to the professional and amateur
championships, there will be a 36-hole Oregon Senior Champion
ship (50 years of age and over) Friday and Saturday. The ama
teurs must have handicaps of 12 or under, unless especially in
vited. The amateurs will not play Sunday unless they are among
the low 60 in the field or among the first 10 among the amateurs.
. . . The entry list includes Pros Dave Jaurez Jr. of San Jose and
Dave Killen of Portland. . . . Bruce Cudd, Walker Cupper; Phil
Getchell, Stanford University ace, and Ralph Dichter of Astoria,
"Champion of Champions" for Oregon, will be among the Simon
pures. . . . Tommy Harmon will be MC. . . .
Wayne Hagen, a comparative newcomer to Eugene and an
ardent golfer, is interested in reviving the Lane County golf
championships with a 54-hole medal tourney at Oakway. . . . Now
it develops there is considerable interest in an all-county tourney
involving Laurelwood, ECC and Cottage Grove as well as Oak
way. . . .
Tentative plan now still in the talking stage is a 72-hoIe
event to be played over a two-weekend period. The field would
be divided and required to play 36 holes each weekend, half play
ing Oakway and the Country Club, the other half Laurelwood and
Cottage Grove then alternating courses the next weekend.

Athletic Office
Moved at U of O
Saturday was moving day for
the athletic staff at the Univer
sity of Oregon as the Webfoot
coaches, business and ticket of
fices and news bureau vacated
the dffices in McArthur Court to
occupy a new office building ad
joining the pavilion.
The new structure was built
both to improve the office facili-l
ties and to replace the area lost
when McArthur Court was rebuilt
last summer. The new building
makes possible combined ticket
and coaching staff offices for the
first time.
Beginning Monday all ticket or
ders for the state tournament will
be handled at the new ticket of
fice location, just north of the
main entrance to McArthur
Court.
Additional reconstruction in
side McArthur Court, including
additional rest rooms, will begin
during the summer and be ready
for next fall.

Choice to Win
DUSSELDORF, Germany UV
Canada was picked to defeat de
fending champion Russia Sunday
in the decisive game of the World
Ice Hockey Championship by a
poll of coaches Saturday as the
United States wound up its tour
ney play with a 1-1 tie against
Sweden.
The result almost certainly cost
the U. S. a chance to the Czecho
slovakia for third place behind
Canada and Russia in the round
robin competition.
The Czechs walloped Poland 17-
2 Saturday and now have 9 points
on a 4-2-1 record compared to 10
points for the U. S. on its final
4-2-2 mark. Canada and Russia
are tied for the lead at 7-0.
Czechoslovakia still has a game
Sunday against Finland, which
won its first game of the tourna
ment Saturday by upsetting Swit
zerland 7-2. Czechoslovakia could
win third place outright by de
feating Finland, or gain a tie in
points by playing a tie with Finland.
Russia scored one "victory"
Sunday when the Congress of the
International Ice Hockey Federa
tion (LIHG) awarded the 1957
tournament to Moscow.
The meet will be the second
major winter sports world event
to be held in the Soviet capital,
coming two years after the recent
World Speed Skating Champion
ships there.
