at a Home clinic after an oper
ation for an ulcer. He was 72.
His funeral was the noisiest

try has seen since World War II.

But despite the noise and the
banned blackshirt salute, there
was no violence.
Libel Measure

the amount of damage in libel
suits by publication of correc
tions will be introduced by Rep.
George Layman, Ncwbcrg.
The bill involves libel com
mitted by accident, in which
there is no malice. Publication of
a correction would reduce the
amount of damages that could be
collected.
It would apply to all publica
tion, whether in print, motion
picture, radio or television.

that Post 3 again will join Willam
ette Women s American Legion
Post 161 in presentation of objec
tive awards to the best junior
high school students of the city.
The awards consist of medals
for the winning boy and girl and
engraved names on a plaque
given to the school. The awards
to the stuacnts are based on high
scholastic attainment, extra-curricula
activity, and leadership.
Ernest Lundecn . was named
chairman of the Post 3 high school
oratorical contest.
This will be the 18th year that
the Oregon American Legion has
sponsored the contest. It operates
in cooperation with the National
Americanism Commission and is
open to all boys and girls who are
students in high schools from
Grades 9 through 12.
State final competition will be
March 11.
Boy Dies Following
Hatchet Accident

boy died in a Portland hospital

after severing a finger while
playing with a hatchets j
The cause of death was not de
termined at once.
The boy was John G. Greer,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Greer
of nearby Oswego.
Delay Foreseen on Proposal
For Crescent Lake Sawmill
Lowell Men Fined
$250 in Justice Court
Two Lowell men were fined
$250 each plus $4.50 court costs
each in Springfield Justice Court
this week on charges of illegal
possession of venison.
The, two, Frank .Kelly Moore
and Thomas Littleton Whisen
hunt, both of Box 212, Lowell,
were arrested by a state police
officer last Sunday.

Stone, regional forest supervisor,
said Thursday it may be several
weeks before any decision is
reached on a proposal to con
struct a sawmill at Crescent Lake.
The Buchanan Interests of
Suthcrlin have applied to the
U. S. Forest Service ior assur
ance that large tract of sub
alpine timber in the Windigo and
Diamond Lake region of the
Umpqua national forest will be
put up for sale if the mill is con
structed. The concern owns a
group of mills.
Chambers of Commerce at
Bend and Redmond have pro
tested any diversion of timber
from the Deschutes forest to the
new mill. They said the allowable
annual cut on the Deschutes na
tional forest provides only a
little more than half the timber
needed for established sawmills,
and that they feared the new
mill may bid on timber from the
Deschutes forest because of its
central location.
Supervisors of the Umpqua,
Willamette and Deschutes na
tional forests and representatives
of Buchanan mills met with Stone
at an informal hearing this week.
"No decision has been made and
it may be many weeks before the
merits of the case have been
studied and the best public in
terest determined," Stone said.

It was incorrectly reported
that Nielsen made the trip, and
was involved in discussions With
Siuslaw Port commissioners and
others at Florence.
The group had journeyed to
the Lane Coast to gather infor
mation to back plans in request
ing federal aid for Siuslaw har
bor improvements.
