Lane County may recelvo up to
$300,000 more in O&C timber re
ceipts during 1955 than it re
ceived during 1954's record-
breaking year, the county board
of commissioners revealed Wednesday.
Lane County last fall received
$1,009,429 as its share of receipts
from timber sales during 1953 in
Western Oregon's 18 O&C coun
ties.
The county commissioners said
Lane may receive nearly $1,300,-
000 next fall as its share from
O&C timber sales made during
1954. They explained the pay
ments are always made the year
following the 12-month period in
which the timber was sold.
Commissioner Kenneth Nielsen
said the reason for the county's
exnected O&C savment increase
is because of a recent announce
ment by the Bureau of Land Man
agement which stated that 519
O&C timber sales were made dur
ing 1954, totaling 728,250,000
board feet. This timber sold for
$15,845,833, averaging $21.76 for
a thousand board feet.
This is compared with 1953, a
record year, when 542,344,000
board feet sold for $11,136,573.28,
an average of $20.36 a thousand
board feet.
O&C funds are also being dis
tributed to the 18 O&C counties
on a revised formula, Commis
sioner Ralph Petersen explained,
He said the formula was changed
following a revaluation of the
18 O&C counties. Under the new
O&C timber resources by the gov
ernment
In the past, Lane County used
to receive 15.8 per cent of the
total O&C payments made to the
formula. Lane will receive 16.23
per cent.
Under federal law, 75 per cent
of receipts from the O&C lands,
less appropriations for access
road construction, are paid the 18
western Oregon counties.
So, although Lane is entitled
to its share of 75 per cent of O&C
receipts, it Is actually getting a
portion of about 50 per cent, be
cause approximately 25 per cent
of receipts are being withheld by
the government for access road
construction.
Here Is the way county com
missioners have estimated what
Lane might receive next fall:
Total gross sales on O&C lands
(excluding controverted), $15.-
84F,833. Eliminate one half of this
$7,921,916 for the govern
ment s 25 per cent share and a
25 per cent share for access roads,
leaving $7,921,916 for apportion-,
ment among the 18 O&C counties.
Since Lane is entitled to 16.23
per cent of this remaining sum,
its share is estimated at nearly
$1,300,000. I

School Bill
Up in Senate
WASHINGTON Wl Sen. Neu-
berger (D-Ore) said Wednesday
"soma 10 million dollars for the
next two years" would be avail
able to Oregon for school con
itruction purposes under terms
of a bill he and Sen. Morse (Ind
Ore) have joined in sponsoring.
The bill, Introduced by Sen.
Hill (D-Ala) early in the session
for himself and 13 others, pro
poses a federal outlay of 500 mil
lion dollars for each of the next
two years to aid construction of
public elementary and secondary
schools.
Neuberger said school enroll
ment nationwide "has broken all
records this year" and in Oregon
alone 40 million dollars in school
construction is needed in the next
two years.
He said Oregon has a large
budget deficit and the federal ap
propriation could ease the bur
dens on taxpayers there as well
aa provide better schools.
Second Alarm
Proves False
WASHINGTON Wl For the
second straight day, police sped
to the home of Sen. McCarthy (It
Wis) in response to neighbors'
alarms of possible danger to the
senator.
On both occasions police found
nothing out of the ordinary.
Wednesday night, five police
men rushed to McCarthy's house
after George W. Ennis, who lives
next door, set off a box alarm.
Ennis said a neighbor heard
noises on a roof and phoned him.
Police failed to find any prowler.
McCarthy came out of his house
in shirt-sleeves, told the officers
he had heard no noises and in
vited them in for coffee.
The day before, Mrs. Ennis told
police she received a telephone
warning to get out of her home
because McCarthy was going to
be "blown up." A police guard
was stationed near the senator's
home.
