FRIDAY AFTERNOON
Willamette at Pleasant Hill.
1:30.
FRIDAY NIGHT
. Marshfield at Eugene, Albany
at Springfield, St. Francis at
Cottage Grove, Crcswell at
Junction City, Oakridge at
mam.
its "the big one" Friday for
Eugene s Axemen when they face
Marshfield's powerful Pirates at
8 p.m. on the Civic Stadium turf
in what could be the deciding
battle in the 1954 District 5-A-l
prep lootoall campaign.
Marshfield, preseason favorite
to claim the championship, leads
the league with three triumphs
while Eugene and North Bend
also are unbeaten in their two
circuit clashes. While Friday
night's encounter could decide
this year's winner, both clubs
have dangerous hurdles left on
the schedule and the loser will
not be out of the race.
Eugene is due for plenty of
trouble at North Bend and
Springfield, while Marshfield will
close its loop action at North
Bend after meeting Medford in a
non-league tilt Oct. 29.
SIX STRAIGHT
Coach Pete Susick's Pirates
will be after their seventh tri
umph without a loss after pound
ing Reedsport, 64-7, Friday
nignr. Marsntield has blanked
Cottage Grove, 33-0, Springfield,
ia-u, ana Kosemirg, 13-0, in
league warfare but its other
three victories were over Class
A-2 teams, including Myrtle
i'oint, Coquille, and Reedsport,
Coach Loyd Amick's Axemen
have whipped Cottage Grove,
25-12, and Roseburg. 19-0. for
their two circuit triumphs. In
non-league action against 5-A-l
opponents, they've defeated
Springfield (in a non-counter)
and Albany and lost to Klamath
Falls and South Salem.
Each team will bring a back-
field with both speed and power
into Friday's contest. Main task
for Eugene will be to stop left
halfback Johnny Johnson, Marsh-
field's little breakaway artist.
The 5-foot, 9-inch, 166-pound sen
ior shares the 5-A-l scoring lead
with Roseburg's Nub Beamer at
36 points. Johnson has tallied 11
times in the three non-league tilts
for a season total of 102 points.
The Pirates found tough bat
tles with lioth Springfield and
Roseburg but Johnson broke
loose for two touchdown gallops,
including a pair in the fourth
quarter against Springfield, to
prevent a tie or upset in each
game. The Marshfield attack has
had trouble this season whenever

LINEMAN'S LOOK at Dave Powell is much safer here
than the view will be when the Eugene fullback goes into
action against Marshfield in Friday night's crucial clash
at Civic Stadium. Photographer Phil Wolcott had to be
tied in Powell's path but otherwise was as brave as any
person in a hurricane's path.
Campy Given
Good Chance
NEW YORK LP Whether an
able-bodied Roy Campanella will
be behind the plate for the Brook
lyn Dodgers next season won't be
known for another four or six
weeks at least.
It will be that long before doc
tors can test the results of the
second operation in six months
on the veteran catcher's left
hand.
After the four-hour operation
Wednesday, it was announced
there was an "excellent chance"
but no out-and-out guarantee
Campy's hand would return to
normal.
Dr. Samuel Schenkman, a neu
rosurgeon who performed the op
eration, and Dr. Lyndon Hill, who
assisted, offered this appraisal
but added: "No more will be
known for from four to six weeks,
when further tests will be made."
2,000 Track Triumphs
SAN BRUNO, Calif. ap Wee
Willie Shoemaker, the winning
est jockey of them all, rode to
his 2,000th victory in five and
one-half years of racing Wednes
day aboard a claiming horse
named Florence House at Tan
foran. Ast the 105 pound saddle-smith
came back to the winner's circle
he received his usual chorus of
good-natured boos interspersed
with a few hand claps as he pos
ed for photographs.
It was his 336th winner of the
1954 campaign as he heads for
his third national riding cham
pionship. Shoemaker tied for the
title with Joe Culmone in 1950
and set an all-time world record
for winners last year with 485
for that season. He is leading in
the race this year.
His 2,000th winner paid off
$6.50, $3.90 and $2.80 a pretty
good price for a fellow who has
dominated this meeting at Ian-
foran from the start. He was the
second favorite of the race.
Earlier, Shoemaker had won
the first race in a photo finish,
finished sixth in the second on
a six-to-one shot, finished second
in the third, and won in the fifth
on a horse named Sure Time
which paid S6.30. He then booted
home his 2,000th winner in the
sixth,
In the 2,000th victory aboard
Florence House, Wee Willie rode
a typical Shoemaker race. He
was last in the six horse field
coming into the stretch, but
came up to collar the leaders
with his usual perfect timing
just before he hit the tape.
The little jockey from Texas
now is tenth on the all-time list
of riders. However, those ahead
of him have been riding three to
five times as long. Johnny Long-
den, who has won more than 4,-i
400 races has been riding 28'
years.
