In One
Ear...
By BOB FRAZIER
THE NICEST THINGS happen to
people sometimes. If they're
lucky, they happer when the per
son is still more or less alive.
George Washington didn't get the
bridge named after him until he
was dead. The same thing hap
pened to McKenzie, the river
man and to Drip 0 Lator, the
coffee pot man.
This columnist is luckier. You
may recall that he's been giving
the Springfield Memorial Bldg.
management the needle for sev
eral months because the men's
room in that otherwise comfort
able building has not been ade
quately marked. Well, Tuesday
the Springfield Booster's Club had
a brief ceremony in which they
unveiled the new marking on the
door. j
There it was in large type.
"M-E-N" it says.
And above the door, in more
dignified letters is the legend,
"Robert B. Frazier Memorial
doorway."
How wonderful it is to be hon
ored in the same manner as
Bruno Heceta!
PRETTY FANCY ceremony,!
speaking of ceremonies, up at
the university Tuesday. Do you
know where all those caps and
gowns came from? From Oregon
State College, that's where.
The reason is that O.S.C. has
storage space and the university
doesn't. So they made a deal.
O.S.C. bought the stuff and the
university rents it when it's
needed.
THERE WAS A LOT of academic
gushing after Zechariah
Chafee's speech to the faculty
Tuesday night at the close of the
big and frantic day. When one
listener commented afterward
that the prof certainly had a won
derful mind, another listener dis
agreed.
"It's not his mind that's so
unusual," he said "What I ad
mire is his guts."
LIVING IN A university town can
be very interesting. Where else
would you see a thing like this
At the inauguration ceremonies
Tuesday a little Chinese girl was
taking notes on what the learned
gentlemen had to say. Her notes
were a glorious mixture of Ens
lish, Chinese and Gregg Short
hand.
THE SENATOR was wrong and

Well, Phil finished up the roll
and had 'em developed. Guy's

POLITICS ISN'T always a dirty
business. Clarence Hvrie. whn is
running for state senator, got on
the radio the other day to talk
aoout nis campaign. He mention
ed his Republican opponents, Don
liusDana and Truman Chase
Said he:
"They are both fine men and
my trionas."
IT WAS YORKTOWN Day Tues
day, which means that Hallo
ween will soon be upon us. It is
interesting to note, then, that
some people are already thinking
doui (jnnstmas.
Ethan Newman and Ed Boclin-
kc are examples.
Ethan, who is postmaster, says
this is time to send Christmas
packages overseas. After Nov. 15
it will be too late, he says, unless
you send 'cm airmail. Then vou
have until the 25lh. Airmail, how
ever, is limited to two pounds
and what doting mother ever lim
ited to two pounds the cookies she
sent her pfc in Japan?
Ed, who runs a printing busi
ness when he isn't running the
Republican Parly, is concerned
about Christmas cards. Every
year, he says, women come in
about the middle of December
and find there are no envelopes
to fit the Christinas cards they've
been making all fall.
Ed suggests that this year the
ladies pick out the envelopes
first, and then make cards to fit.
Observes Ritual
NEW DELHI, India Ml Re
ports from Jodhpur Wednesday
