Hallways
Important
To Home
Just as arteries are important
to the functioning of the heart, so
are hallways important to the
functioning of the home.
While we find that the trend
in homes today leans toward a
subtle disguise of halls between
rooms,, there still remains the
problem of what to do with the
hallway.
Hallways link the vital parts of
your home. Other than the en
trance hall, they are usually not
accorded much prominence in the
home. They vary greatly in size.
Don't overlook their appeal and
possibility in the decorative
scheme of your home.
A console is perhaps one of the
first ideas to come to mind. But
how about a console with versa
tility as well as decorative value
a console that is also a poudrc
table. Yes, there arc such things.
Hallways loo, are ideal loca
tions for desks or writing tables.
Placed cither in front or to the
best light side of the window, thev
offer the homemakcr a view while
catching up with her personal
notes, or household bookkeeping.
Serving carts, now more a
standard item in every home, fit
well in a hall. Here they may be
brought into quick use when the
entertaining occasion demands.
They are now designed in many
accent themes, and will add a
decorator's touch to the home and
the hallway.
There is no better way to treat
your hallway than to give it fur
nishings of its own. Don't let the
hallway of your home be nothing
more than a by-way. Let it bo a
part of your home that adds to
the completeness, decoratively
and functionally, and with versatility.
Clean Concrete Floor
The layer of soft chalky mate
rial that "dusts" some concrete
floors can often be removed with
steel wool. The floor should then
be thoroughly cleaned and treat
ed with a hardener such as so
dium silicate or zinc sulphate.

FOR ONE OR two boys, from five to fifty, the furnishings of this little room arc as
adaptable as they arc attractive. Twin beds placed foot to foot across one wall lead
this eight foot narrow room into a full life. Two night stands joined by a long, strong
glass becomes a desk. Inexpensive tweed and matching checked fabrics are spot and
dire repellent and washable. A map of the world, home-caught butterflies, mounted
and framed and a trout net equal ingenious, practical male wall decorations.
Vacuum Blower Used
To Give Book's Airing
A homemakcr says that after
she has dusted her books, using
her vacuum cleaner for the pur
pose, she turns its blower attach
ment on the bookshelves and
gives them a good, sharp airing.
She declares freshening the
books in this manner prevents
mildew, especially in damp
weather.
Build Doll House to Delight Child
If you want to win your way
into the heart of a little lady, this
dream of a doll house is your
key.
Follow a full-size stcp-by-step
pattern, and you will be amazed
to see how easily this doll house
may be built. The pattern is on
the same principle as a dress
pattern; it is in full size and thus
offers the quickest and easiest
method yet devised whereby an
unskilled person can build this
house using only hand tools.
All the materials needed for
this are readily available, in stock
sizes in lumber yards every
where. With the pattern comes
a purchase list and this tells you
what and how much material
you will need.
The smart looking clapboard
siding and shingles of. this dream
doll house are made from card
board which comes with daily
Durchascs. Those stately, impos
ing pillars on the doll house are
mere v cut irom siock size Dai-
ustrades, if you want to build a
reallv fine lob. Dowels or
broomstick can be used for the
low cost house. Total cost of all
materials will be low. In fact,
less than half of what a similar
house would cost if you went to
a toy shop to buy it ready made.
The house stands 26 inches! Allow two weeks for delivery.

high, is 19 inches wide and mea

This, then, allows the little girl
to put actual miniature furnish
ings and tiny dolls inside the
house.
A house should stand on its

and when you are all finished,
if you are going to have the
house permanently on a low ply.
wood table, or other flat sur
face you might paint it grass-
green so that it will look like
a lawn. A plywood platform
mounted on wheels is the ideal
way to keep this house even in
the smallest apartment.
Or, if the house is to be trans
ported and not on a permanent
base, cut a piece of felt or flan
nel or some other non-skid mate
rial, and that will serve as the
green ground and give a touch of
the real outdoors to the doll
house Maybe the child will pre
fer to cut out little trees and
shrubs to put around the house.
Just reading the pattern direc
tions will inspire you to go ahead
wih the doll house.

A. One or two year old trees

October preferably. Apples bear
at 8 to 10 years of age unless

50 to 55 degrees.
Q. Are not peppers and pim

Lamps Fit
Any Setting
At home in any setting is the
dramatic theme of a special
group of lamps, presented for
the first time in stores from
coast to coast this fall. Each
lamp is designed to be beauti
fully compatible with any decor
ating background: Traditional,
Provincial or Contemporary.
The color palette of this new
line of lamps is keyed to today's
interiors: charcoal, pebble sand,
pebble gold, gray stone, white
stone, coral and bronze. These
colors will harmonize with or
accent today's color themes.
Lamp manufacturers also
heightened the utility of their
new lamps by incorporating im
proved lighting features into
basic designs. For the budget
minded, these lamps have both
eye and style appeal at a mod
est price, ranging from -ten to
thirty dollars. They are also co
ordinated, color-wise, with many
attractive table accessories.
Most of the lamp bases are in
simple, classic forms, which are
the keynote of good taste.
Among them is a base, called
"Fluted Urn," in green agate
color, topped by a plastic shade
with shadow checks and laced in
black, to match the wood base.
