To Quit Korea
SEOUL M Announcement that
the U.S. 3rd Division would leave
Korea in October was accompan
ied Monday by renewed South Ko
rean charges of bad faith in
Washington and complaints the
withdrawal will leave Korea open
for Red conquest.
"The stage is set for Korean
unification, but by the Commu
nists," said a statement by Maj.
Gen. Choi Duk Shin, a former
armistice negotiator who accom
panied President Syngman Rhce
to Washington recently.
The statement appeared to be in
reply to one by the U.S. Embassy
last week. Tho embassy insisted
the redeployment of U.S. troops
had been discussed with South Ko
rean officials in Washington. It
also emphasized that South Korea
was not being abandoned.
The U.S. 8th Army announced
Sunday Ihe 3rd would be tho fifth
American division to leave Korea
this year and that a sixth will fol
low, leaving two U.S. divisions
still on tho divided peninsula.
The sixth division lo be rede
ployed has not been identified
but observers expressed belief it
Marine and 7th Infantry Divisions
in Korea.

For Wild Mushroom Use
Every year a good many peo
ple roam the fields and woods
collecting mushrooms which they
cook and eat.
This is a dangerous practice as
there is no way to distinguish
between the edible mushrooms
and the several poisonous kinds.
Even experts often have difficulties.
The superstition that a silver
coin will become tarnished from
the poisonous varieties if it is put
in the dish in which mushrooms
arc being cooked is wholly false.
Also the taste is not reliable,
us most of the poisonous species
are supposed to have an agree
able flavor.
In the United States most cases
of poisoning are caused by mush
rooms of the amanita family, the
best known variety of which is
sometimes called the "death
angel."
SYMPTOMS
The poison from the "deati.1
angel," or amanita plialloidcs, is
technically known as a toxin.
About six to eighteen hours after
eating this dangerous mushroom
the symptoms begin to appear.
rhey usually consist of nausea.
vomiting, diarrhea and severe ab
dominal pains. There may be
great thirst, inability to urinate,
dizziness, jaundice after two or
three days, and unconsciousness.
More than half of those who
arc stricken usually die, this gen
erally occurring five to eight
days after eating the mushrooms.
There is no good treatment for
mushroom poisoning of this kind
although if the stomach can be
washed out early most of the
toxin is removed and the chances
of recovery are better.
Anotner type ot poisonous
mushroom Is called amanita mus-
cana, or the "fly amanita."
Here the poison is of a differ
ent type and is related to a drug
commonly used in medicine
called pilocarpine.

hours of eating the mushrooms
and when death occurs it is usu
ally within twenty-four hours.
OTHER SYMPTOMS
In addition to the symptoms
of vomiting, diarrhea and ab
dominal pain, there is also sweat
ing, tearing of the eyes, narrow
ing of the pupils of the eyes,
slow pulse and in fatal cases,
convulsions and unconsciousness.
This variety, if identified early
enough, can be efficiently treated
with atropine. In such properly
treated cases about one in ten
succumbs.
It seems quite unnecessary to
pick mushrooms in the woods
and run this great risk when safe
ones can be so easily bought.
Even experts have been caught
by failure to tell whether cer
tain mushrooms were one of the
edible varieties or were poi
sonnus.
The safe thing to do is to eat
only those mushrooms which
have been passed by competent
or official inspection.

Describing various uses of ra
dioactive isotopes in medicine
and in industry, Brig. Gen. El
bert DeCourscy said in a talk at
the opening exercises of the
George Washington University
school of medicine:
'A woman must put her hand
dangerously close to a cutting
tool on a machine. She wears a
ring that holds a radioisotopes.
The hand comes to the danger
line, and a radiation detection
instrument clicks high danger.
This stops the machine."

day claimed the lives of two.
Tony Joseph Depalmo, 35, of
Seattle, was injured fatally when
a car he was riding in struck a
traffic divider. Depalmo and
three others in the car were pa
tients at the veterans hospital at
Vancouver, Wash. The driver, J.
Allen Burks, 24, Eugene, was
jailed on a charge of being
drunk. His wife, Murriel- Doris
Burks, 18, was treated at a Port
land hospital for chest injuries.
Scott Burness, 11, was killed
when struck by a car as he ran
across Sunset Highway to observe
a minor two-car collision. The
boy was the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jack E. Burness, Beaverton. The
accident occurred near their
home.
