WALLA WALLA M Fingerling
salmon are tough little customers
that can go over certain spillways
180 feet high and through turbines
in 100-foot dams without serious
injury, says the Washington State
Department of Fisheries.
Two biologists made tfteir iina-
ings public in a research bulletin
called "Investigations of Mortal
ities to Downstream Migrant Sal
mon at Two Dams on the Elwha
River."
The findings of the pair, Dale
E. Schoeneman and Charles C.
Junge Jr., will have an important
effect on design of power dams in
the Pacific Northwest. A contro
versy has raged for decades over
possible high mortality to finger-
lings in their downstream migra
tion over spillways and through
turbines.
Marked fingerlings were re
leased by the biologists at the
spillways and turbines of the 200
foot Glines dam and the 100-foot
Elwha dam. Both dams have tur
bines which turn about225 or 300
revolutions per minute with blade
clearance of about three inches.
Larger dams on the main stem
of the Columbia turn at much
slower rates than at the Elwha
river dams.
LADDERS PROVEN
Army engineers say the success
of fish ladders and elevators in
getting salmon over dams has
been demonstrated at Bonneville
and McNary dams.
Schoeneman and Junge said no
significant mortalities were noted
at the Glines spillway, which has
a free fall of 180 feet. At the El
wha spillway, 100 feet high, a
pronounced Chinook mortality
was found. The method of re
leasing and controlling the spilled
water made the difference.
While small salmon showed they
could go over a properly built and
controlled spillway, 180 feet high,
they had trouble when it came to
turbines in such high structures.
Greater pressures imposed on the
fish were cited as the reason.
The biologists said the critical
depth of water at which fish suf
fer mortalities lies somewhere be
tween 100 and 200 feet.
Schoeneman and Junge also
found that Chinook salmon finger-
lings would search in deep water
in order to get downstream if a
surface exit at the dam was not
available. Silver salmon finger
lings, however, would not explore
below the surface for an exit, but
would wait in the lake until a fa
vorable exit presented itself along
the surface.
