Army Still Seeking
McCarthy Informer

shearings, and said it had been
given to him by a young Army
Intelligence officer whom he dc
,clined to name. It dealt with the
possibility of espionage at Ft.
Monmouth, N. J.
Stevens, returning from a two
week tour of Army units in Eur
ope, was questioned about com
ments made Sunday by Atty. Gen.
Brownell in a television appear
ance. Browncll said that whoever
gave McCarthy the document vio
lated the law but the officer has
not yet been identified. He said
the search was continuing.

said he expects to remain Secre
tary of the Army "so long as the
President wants me." He said also
that "as far as I know," John G.
Adams will remain as Army
Both Stevens and Adams were ?$Sf
key figures in the dispute with
McCarthy and members of his
Senate Investigations subcommit
tee staff. The possibility that one
or both would leave their posts
had been mentioned during the
hearings.

Elk Steaks

not, are in for a fine steak feed
this week just because a strange
bull got in, the pasture with one

The bull is a four-point bull elk
and, as many Oregon farmers
know, elk don't cotton up to cows
of tile bovine sort.
It happened Sunday noon. Cald
well, who lives near Meadowview
south of Junction City, called
state police to say that the elk
was in the process of killing his
cow. Could he shoot it?
Permission was given and the
job was done.
State police found that the elk
weighed about 800 pounds. Dres
sed out it came to half that. They
put the meat in a locker to await
transportation to the prison-
where much of the out-of season
game goes.
Officers said elks are tradi
tional enemies of cattle, but that
fortunately they rarely venture
down into the valley. The last in
stance was more than a year ago
when one traipsed into the Al
bany area to feud with cattle,
and also ended up as steak.
The State Game Commission
says a herd of more than 30 elk
live in Ihe hills between the Sius-
law and the Alsea.
Cyclists Injured
Two motorcyclists Reeves J.
Holbrook and Laverne Olen Nel
son, both of lit. 2, Creswell re
ceived minor injuries at 7:20
p.m. Sunday when Ihe cycle both
were riding skidded half a mile
north of Jasper. Both were
knocked unconscious but had re
covered by the time an ambu
lance arrived, state police said.
They were not hospitalized.
Fire Destroys
Ashland Mill

An estimated $175,000 damage
was caused over the weekend by
two fires in widely separated
areas of Oregon.
Saturday night, the Ijthia
Lumber Co. sawmill at Ashland
was destroyed in a fire that
raged for more than two hours
and caused about $100,000 loss to
the firm.
FIRE CONTAINED
Ashland firemen succeeded in
keeping the fire from spreading
to the adjacent planing mill and
lumber storage area.
A witness, who was driving to
ward town when the fire started,
said the mill "blossomed up all
at once." Firemen said it may
have been caused by a boiler explosion.
The mill is owned by a corpor
ation of its more than 100 em
ployes and had not been shut
down during the current lumber
strike. There were no casualties.
PORTLAND BLAZE
Nendel's Chicken Inn on South
west Canyon Road near Portland
was swept by fire early Sunday
afternoon. Damage was estimated
at $75,000.
The flames spread from the
inn's kitchen to the roof and rear
of the building but were checked
before they reached the main
dining room. Three pieces of
equipment and 18 volnnteer fire
men from Beaverton fought the
blaze. ,
Owner Robert Harrington pre
dicted the inn would open again
for business within three weeks.

Youth Survives
150-Foot Fall

150-foot fall to Ihe foot of the low
er South Silver Creek Falls near
here Sunday.
He was brought to a hospital
here with a fractured shoulder,
bruises and possible internal in
juries. Attendants said his con
dition was fair.
The youth was on an outing
with parents and friends at Silver
Creek Falls State Park when he
slipped and fell near the top of a
trail. Members of Ihe party and
park employes had difficulty get
ting him from the foot of the falls
up to the park where an ambul
ance was waiting.
