He did not mention Eisen
hower and he said this was "not
a Democratic nor a Republican
matter.
But he called for the election
in November of a Congress that
will stop "sending American
money to nations which ship the
sinews of war" to Communist
China while hundreds of Ameri
can service men are "being
brain-washed in Communist
bloodstained dungeons."
"BLOOD TRADE"
This is the same "blood trade"
issue on which he has challenged
Eisenhower before. The adminis
tration lakes the position the
United States in its own interest
should aid other free nations
even when those nations engaged
in. limited trade with the Red
bloc.
Earlier the running feud be
tween McCarthy and Sen. Sy

League in Newton. Mass. And he
said he regretfully sent Fisher
DaeK to lioston when the young
man told him he was a member
of the Lawyers' Guild while he
was in law schools, and for some1
months afterward.
"Little did 1 dream," Welch
said, "you could be so reckless
and so cruel as to do an injury
to that lad. I fear he shall always
bear a scar needlessly inflicted
by you. If it were in my power
to forgive you for your reckless
cruelty, I would do so. I like to
think I am a gentleman, but your
forgiveness will have to come
from someone other than me."

"Mr. McCarthy," Welch mid,
his voice ice-cold and his manner
radiating outrage, "I will not

Fisher, president of the Repub

on a dare promised he'd go un
der oath before a special investi
gating committee on his financial
affairs if Symington would give
sworn testimony in the present
inquiry. Neither senator made a
firm commitment on any specific
time for testifying, however.
In their bitter exchange Mc
Carthy referred to Symington as
an "alleged man" and heavily im
plied he once paid off a known
Communist and took the money
from the pay cheeks of St. Louis
factory workers. Symington hotly
denied the accusation, which Mc
Carthy first made against him
two years ago. ,
The climatic encounter be
tween Welch and McCarthy came
after the Boston lawyer using
irony as his weapon tried to
show Cohn "sat on" evidence of
alleged subversion in the Army
instead of taking it to Secretary
Stevens and saying:
"Sic 'em, Stevens."
BURSTS OF LAUGHTER
McCarthy flushed under recur
rent bursts of laughter from
spectators at this line of ques
tioning, and later struck out at
Welch.
He declared the elderly Army
counsel originally brought to
Washington as one of his aides a
young lawyer associated with his
firm, Fisher, who was McCarthy
said a member of the National
Lawyers Guild after that organ
ization was listed as subversive
by the house Committee on Un-
American Activities.
"I don't think," McCarthy said,
"you can find any place, any
where, an organization which has
done more to defend Communists
. ... to defend espionage agents
and to aid the Communist cause,
than the man whom you origin
ally wanted down here at your
right hand.
but Welch interrupted:
Let us not assassinate this lad
further, senator. You have done
enough. Have you left no sense
of decency?"
McCarthy would not he quieted.

Fisher said he did not see the
exchange on television because
he and his wife were visiting
friends in the western part of
the state.
The young attorney enlisted in
May 4. It said legal issues remain
lo be threshed out.
In New York, the guild said in
a statement that McCarthy had
cited an "old and discredited" re
port from the House Un-American
Activities Committee.
The guild said it "is not a Com
munist organization nor a Communist-front
organization, nor
Communist dominated."
