Boys to Get
New Jackets
SALEM Wl Two Bend boys,
who lost their jackets in putting
out a possibly dangerous forest
fire, are going to get new jackets
from the Keep Oregon Green
Assn.
Albert Wiesendanger, executive
secretary of KOG, said the boys
are Jlelvm Haugin, 11, and Jack
Blodgett, 10. They also will get
service under fire certificates,
and badges taking them into the
Green Guard.
E. J. Parker, district forest
ranger of the Deschutes National
Forest, and Vernon Carlin, chief
of the Bend Fire Department, re
ported that the boys prevented
spread of a fire on the banks of
the Deschutes River a mile above
Bend on May 31.
They wrote to the boys:
"The fact that you soaked your
jackets in the river and beat the
fire down when it threatened to
spread again demonstrates the
sacrifice you boys were willing
to make to protect your country's
resources. Your action prevented
a costly fire suppression job by
containing the fire within a 50
foot circle until help arrived.
"It is most regrettable that the
carelessness of some individual
caused you boys to destroy your
clothing in order to meet the
needs for stopping this fire. We
are investigating the possibility of
replacing these jackets, which
you boys so willingly ruined for
a lust cause. Our sincere thanks
to you both."
Wiesendanger said he d see
that the jackets are replaced.
stand" the delay any longer.
She served 11 months in prison
on conviction of second degree
murder in the death of Jalmar
Tarkia, then last July she was
brought back here to jail while
an appeal was under way. Last
February the state Supreme
Court said she had not been
brought to trial soon enough
after indictment.
A rehearing was asked by Dist.
Atty. Winston Bradshaw and the
courts decision on that is
awaited.
Pinball Petition Filed
SALEM (IB A petition for a
rehearing into the validity of a
Portland ordinance forbidding pin
ball machines was filed with the
Oregon Supreme Court in Salem
this week by Stanley G. Terry,
Portland coin machine operator.
The Supreme Court has not yet
set a date to consider the petition,
The action has the effect of keep
ing pinball machines in operation
until the issue is settled.
The Portland ordinance has
been deemed valid by an earlier
Supreme Court decision, which
reversed a Multnomah county rul
ing against the city law. Terry's
petition contests the Supreme
Court ruling.
