IN THE SPRING A GARDENER'S fancy turns to plants and flowers. These men,
members of the Rhododendron and Camellia Society of Eugene, admire a rhododen
dron in bloom at the residence of Del James, 2008 Floral Hill Drive, at left. Dr.
Charles D. Thompson is at right. They are planning a flower show May 2 coinciden
tal with the opening of the Hendricks Park Rhododendron Garden.
Rhododendron Gardens
Scheduled to Open May 2
Eugene city park officials and
members of the Men's Rhododen
dron and Camellia Society have
announced plans for opening the
Hendricks Park Rhododendron
Garden Sunday, May 2.
The garden is located on seven
acres, of city-owned land which
served as the old deer pens on a
prominent oak knoll in the north
west section of Hendricks Park.
It has been maintained-by the
city department of public parks
and recreation for the past three
years and has grown increasing
ly with each succeeding year. To
date the garden contains many
hnusands of evergreen and de
ciduous azaleas, camellias, rhodo
dendrons, and other high-qualily
plants and shrubs.
The garden is rapidly becom
ing, according to W. Riley Mats
ler, superintendent of the city
bureau, one of the most out
standing place of its kind on the
West Coast. Members of the gar
den club and their friends have
donated the many thousands of
plants, and no city tax funds have
seen paid for them, according to
Matslcr.
On May 2, from 10 a.m. until
3 p.m. Society members will be
on hand to explain the purposes
of the garden to the public, to
help in conducting tours, and to
discuss care of the type of plants

it. However, doctors reassure,
the fact that their backs are dif
ferent shouldn't cause most of
them any serious trouble pro
vided they don't strain or injure
their backs.
It's well to rememher that
backaches can be both caused
and aggravated by worn-out or
inferior bedding. Consequently,
bed boards are a poor solution.
They do nothing to change the
lack of support in a poor mat
tress Ihey simply cancel tne
action of the bedspring.
Anyone plagued with frequent
backaches should consult a spe
cialist. If a thorough examina
tion reveals no injuries, his best
bet is to try switching to extra-
firm bedding which provides ad
ditional support and helps take
the strain off of "weak" backs.
which are being planted and
maintained in the garden.
There are now about 25 mem
bers in the Society. President is
Dr. John MacKinnon, secretary
treasurer is Paul Beistel. The
members are constantly at work
to increase the plantings in the
garden; and some of the speci
mens have been imported from
as far away as England and
China.
Through cooperation of park
and Society members, all plant
ings are being maintained at a
high level of quality. Emphasis
is being placed on growing of
flowering plants with a strong
emphasis on rhododendrons and
camellias.
The main purpose of the gar
den, according to Society spon
sors, is to provide a place of
beauty which will offer educa
tional and recreational oppor
tunities to Eugene citizens.
Society members in charge of
various aspects of the May 2
flower show are Dr. Charles D
Thompson, publicity; Merle
Saunders, general chairman:
Marshall Lyons, exhibits; Dr.
Royal Gick, chairman of judges:
Del James, chairman of classifi
cation; and W. P. Riddlesbargcr,
chairman of wholesalers ' exhibits.
The flower show will be free
to the public. Society members
and city park officials have sug
gested that women visitors on
May 2 wear low-heeled shoes to
permit easier walking through
the garden.
From ' the rim of the garden,
located high above the city, spec
tators can see a major portion
of Eugene.
Drapes Good
Way to Decide
Color Scheme
A homemaker about to decide
on the room colors for a home
decoration job is often a woman
plagued by uncertainty. She
knows tnat she likes reds or
blues or greens or yellows, but
she needs expert help in choosing
one or two other colore to com
bine with her favorite. An excel
lent way to ike sure your color
scheme is harmonious is to select
a good fabric and use the colors
of the design. This will create a
whole exciting color-right scheme.
Professional decorators often use
this method in planning their
rooms.
When a homemaker takes her
color cues from a fine drapery
fabric, she can have confidence
that the color combination has
been chosen by top-notch design
ers and color experts.
Dual Purpose
Bedding Nov
Slim, Sleek
Completely new concepts In
design have been incorporated in
the dual purpose sleep equip
ment which will be fealured at
stores throughout the nation this
May during "Better Bedding
Time."
To satisfy the demand for
good-looking furniture that pro
vides round-the-clock service in
today's smaller, more compact
home, the latest double duly
bedding replaces heavy, cumber
some items that shriek their dual
ity with a wide variety of slim,
sleek lines to suit any taste.
Among the innovations are
sleep sofas with trim, tapered
backs that combine equally good
seating and sleeping qualities,
but belie the fact that they are
anything but handsome conven-!
tional pieces. Equipped with
comfortable innerspring or latex j
mattresses, they open into double
beds. Companion chairs are avail
able for the lady who desires a
matching living room suit.
Another note-worthy style re
finement is the increased use of
wrought iron, brass and brass
ferruled wood in arm detail and
tapered legs. Bumper ends in
dual purpose sleep sofas also are
coming into greater prommance;
in both round and square design.
Patterened after "California
styled" upholstered furniture,
they appear in two-tone as well
as solid fabrics, generally metal
lic threaded, and frequently
double as upholstered tables.
To take advantage of corners
and offer greater possibilities in
furniture arrangement, sectionals
form twin beds. Modernizing the
old trundle bed, there is a studio
couch with an undercarriage that
swings out to form a second sin
gle bed. Left out as a right-angular
"sectional unit," it can also
be used for extra seating.
New dual purpose designs also
offer relief for the lanky man
formerly forced to choose be
tween sleeping in an uncomfor
table, cramped position and let
tins his foot dangle in thin air.
