Project Can Be
Folding Screen
An allractive folding screen
which will serve as a room divid
er when occasion arises, can be
made from a few panels of hard
wood plywood and some lx2 inch
framing lumber.
The screen may have any num
ber of panels, from three to six.
Convenient panel sizes are 2x5 or
txa leei. -j ne tirst step is to put
together the desired number ot
rectangular frames, using cither
butt or mortised joints. Position
the plywood on the frame, using
glue and brads, the latter six
inches apart.
Two hinges per fold should
be maple, one 8 inches from the
top and the other 10 inches from
the bottom. Mortise the frames to
receive ine nmges and mount
tnem in place, making certain
that the pins extend far enough
from the frame to prevent bind
ing when the screen is folded,

YOUR GARDEN NOTEBOOK"
BY MARK M. TAYLOR '
ADVICE FOR BEGINNING
GARDENERS
Learn all you can from quali
fied local sources, your county
agent, seedsmen, etc.
Plant only the quantity for
which you can properly care.
Plant odd varieties only as ex
periments, in small quantities.
Enjoy your gardening through
association with these living
plants.
Reap a harvest of your efforts
if you have failures, try to de
termine the causes, and find a
remedy and try again.
DO YOU KNOW
That petunias are the most uni
versally popular of all seed-grown
annuals?
When sowing seeds in flats, the
sou should be moist but not wet?
Zoysia, an extensively adver
tised lawn grass substitute, is a
creeping perennial grass from
Southern Asia, most successfully
used in warmer climates?
That Bermuda was the first re
gion to grow Easter Lilies com
mercially?
Lilacs can be grown in large
pots and forced into bloom in a
greenhouse?
Leguminous plants (peas, beans.
clover, etc.) have the ability to
transform atmospheric nitrogen
into compounds for use of plants
hence are often used for cov
er-cropping, as when turned un
der they add this quality to the
soil?
Leguminous plants actually
leave a soil richer after being
grown than it was previously?
Spring fertilizing of lawn is of
ten on the basis of a 5-10-5 fertil
izer, at 1 cubic yard compost with
15 lbs. of fertilizer to 1,000 square
feet of lawn?
That Kalmia, or Mountain Laur
el, is a member of the Heath fam
ily? ..

READER'S QUESTIONS
ANSWERED
Q. My new lawn planted last
fall is now about 4 incnes nign.
How much should I cut off now?
W.B.
Ans. Set the mower to 2 to 2W
inches for now then later set the
mower at 114 inches.
Q. What fertilizer is best to use
on lawns now? W.B. -
A. A yearly top dressing of
weed -free organic fertilizer at
25 lbs. to 1,000 square feet is ad
visable. This builds up the or
ganic content of the soil that may
be washed away by the previous
season's irrigating. Use of 3 to 5
lbs. of ammonium sulphate per
1,000 square feet of lawn every
6 to 8 weeks is good practice if
well watered in. Watering in pre
vents the possibility of burning.
Q. Isn't present new growth on
roses liable to be damaged by a
late frost? E.D.
A. Certainly, but If this hap
pens, prune the blighted growth
back to the next outside eye and
you will find that it will recover
rapidly. Roses are, as a rule, very
hardv.
Q. When is the average date of
the last killing frost in the lower
Willamette Valley? R.P.
A. Generally conceded to be
about May 15, though it may vary
to as early a date as March 15.
Q. What fruit trees require pol
lenizers to insure fruit?
A. Usually, cherries, peaches
and grapes require pollenizera In
order in insure fruiting by the fe
male plant. This may vary with
Hideaway Bed Small
Homes Space Saver
varieties and species. It's a eood
iaea to plant two of any kind of
truit or nut trees to insure an adequate-set
of fruit.
Q. Please list some good bed
ding plants Mrs. U.S.
a. snapdragons, primroses.
marigolds, asters, phlox, petunias
and pansies are Sume of the most
reliable.
Q. When and how do vou sow
weed of Scarlet Sage? Mrs. O.M,
A. how where they are to flow
er or they can be started in pots
or flats. Night temperature for
good germination should not be
less than 60 degrees, for Scarlet
sage, or Salvia. Several varieties
of the old Scarlet Sage are now
available for different heiehts and
blooming periods. This is an ex
cellent annual too often over
looked in local gardents.
. I have a new greenhouse and
would like to try raising potted
plants from seed. What are some
popular ones of fairly easy cul
ture for a beginner? Mrs. A.K.
A. Cineraries. Calceolaris and
Cyclamen are all good. Green
house temperature should be from
50 to 57 degrees for best results.
Q. What annual plants do well
in a fairly shady location? Mrs.
O.T.
A. Coleus, Salvia and Imoa-
tiens.
a. i am interested in raisine
camellias. Do they require a
spraying program? Mrs. L.H.
A. Generally camellias are dis
ease-free but one of the scale in
sect pests is a serious problem so
as a precaution it is wise to spray
in- may or June, using a volck
spray, following the manufactur
er s directions implicity.
Q. I have collected a number
of young native rhododendrons.
Should these be topped to prevent
scraggiy growth? K.L.
A. Yes, pinching out the topi
will encourage branching.
Q We have two large camel
lia bushes that have, as vet,
shown no buds. Why is this? E.T.
A. You may have late bloom
ing varieties, or, more probably
your watering and fertilizing pro
gram last year did not permit
such growth to form as it custom
arily does. Never let the plant dry
out during hot weather. Then, in
fall begin to withhold water so
as to discourage new growth that
might winter kill.
Hideaway beds are enjoying a
comeback and for a good reason,
It's because the homes being
built these days are generally
smaller and more compact, yet
the people who buy them like to
have as much room to move about
in as they ever had before.
Then there are those who would
like to have, say, a guest room
and a study, but don't have room
.or both.
Hideaway beds can be a practi
cal answer in either case. Install
ed under a book case in a study,
a hideaway doesn't diminish floor
space a bit, and you'd never sus
pect it was there. Folded down, it
converts the study into a guest
room in a'flash.
One model will fit into a recess
only 12 inches deep. It is built for
any standard single or H-double
mattress. Counterbalancing
springs absorb most of the weight
of the bed as it is raised and low
ered and the bed's legs fold away
to conserve every inch of space.
Nothing could be simpler than
Holes, Hooks
Make Home
Storage Easy
A handy storage device, new
on the market, is simply a panel
having dozens of even-spaced
holes and various kinds of hooks
and hangers that fit into them.
On these fixtures you can hang
just about anything that has to
be stored in and about the home,
ranging from hats and shoes to
kitchen utensils.
There are numerous uses in
the kitchen for hanging most
used utensils in an accessible
spot; in the workshop for the
haadyman's tools, in a child's
room for hanging toys, pictures
and prized school work; in the
garage for garden tools and all
the rest of the things that usually
stand precariously against the
walls or in the corners; in
closets, where the perforated
panels will literally double or
triple the storage capacity.
The' perforated panels, avail
able in lumber yards, come in
eight standard sizes, and there
are more than 60 kinds of self-
locking, quick-changing fixtures
to fit into the holes. Decorative
as well as functional, these
"working walls" may be install
ed right over an existing wall
Pictures, planters, clocks and
other items may then be hung
wherever desired and changed:
almost instantly whenever the
old arrangement becomes tire
some.
YOU CAN REMOVE ROUGE
from towels and handkerchiefs
by softening the stain with glycer
ine and then washing in hot soap
suds.

the installation of a recess tied
like this one. A half-dozen screws

the counterbalancing springs can
be attached to a base frame which
in turn is solidly secured to the
floor.
naiseo, me oed rests on one
side. There are others that stand
on end in their enclosures, and
still others that pivot or roll on
wheels into closets.
The problem for the home own
er who wishes to install his own
hideaway bed is the construction
of an enclosure for it. This, too,
can be handled simply.
The bed might be concealed by
floor-to-ceiling drapes or bamboo1
curtains hung from a ceiling
track, or could be built into a
room divider between dining and
living areas.
Another convenient and attract
ive arrangement calls for a floor-lo-ceiling
enclosure made of raised-grain
plywood. Closed it looks
like a wardrobe cabinet, but ac
tually houses an upright hideaway
bed. Hinged doors on the "cabi
net" are equipped with drop
leaves for convenient writing
space.
Recess beds that disappear into
the walls of an expansion attic
add a lot of extra play space for
the youngsters during the day.
finally, don t overlook the base
ment rumpus room as a location
for a recess bed if there is no
room elsewhere in the house.
