A troupe of entertainers from
the Grand Ole Oorv sh nw wilt hp
in Eugene Tuesday for an 8 p.m.
concert in McArthur Court.
Among them will be Minnie Pearl-
Roy Acuff, T. Texas Tyler, Dot
and smoky, the Smoky Mountain
Boys and other top entertainers
who have entranced music lovers
in all parts of the nation.
Minnie Pearl, the inimitable
story teller, has been billed as
the top attraction. She will tell
of people she knew as a girl in
Centcrville, Tenn. A 14-year vet
eran of Grand Ole Opry, Minnie
Pearl twice has loured Europe
entertaining members of the
armed forces.
Perhaps as well known as Min
nie Pearl is Roy Acuff, who is not
only a talented musician but also
a gifted writer of several plain
tive hit tunes. Acuff, a native of
Tennessee, grew up determined
to play pro ball for the Yankees.
But he got a sunstroke, and
learned to play the fiddle instead.
Thus armed, he ran for governor
of Tennessee on the Republican
ticket. He lost.
Acuff is widely acclaimed for
his "Great Speckled Bird," "Pre
cious Jewel," "Wabash Cannon
Ball," and "Sweeter Than Flow
ers." He is also the author of
"Crash on the Highway," a tune
that has not been heard so much
lately,
Comic relief will be provided by
Lonnie Wilson, better known as
"Pap," who heads up the jug
band. Pete Kirby will also pro
vide laughs as "Bashful Brother
Oswald."
The serious side will be pre
sented by T. Texas Tyler, whose
songs, such as "Remember Me,
"Beautiful Life," "I Love You
Because," and "Beautiful Morn
ing Glory" have become smash
hits. He is also the author of the
very sad "Dad Gave My Dog
Away," and the deeply religious
"Deck of Cards."

"Saskatchewan," Universal - In
ternational's Technicolor film
about a Royal Mountie inspector
who defies an order of his su
perior officer in order to prevent
an Indian massacre, will play at
the Heilig Theater through Monday.
It is an intensely absorbing
Western, laid in the Canadian
Rockies in the 70's and boasts
fine scenic photography and a
story of rugged action.
Alan Ladd plays the Mounted
Police inspector. Shelley Winters
is the female lead, the innocent
victim of a murder charge. There
is real J, Fenimore Cooper qual
ity in a sequence in which the
Canadians and the girl escape
down the lake in canoes, hotly
pursued by the wild Sioux
Indians.
Starting later in the week at
the Heilig will be the U-I West
ern in Technicolor, "Ride Clear
of Diablo." It stars Audie Mur
phy, Abbe Lane, Susan Cabot,
and Dan Duryea, and is the tale
of a young railroad surveyor who
returns to his home to avenge
the killings of his father and
brother.
Red Snow" will accompany
this film. Guy Madison, Ray Mala,
and Carole Mathews co-star. Mala
plays the part of Sgt. Koovuk of
the Alaskan Air Command and
who is sent to investigate mys
terious lights from an Eskimo
island. During the venture, an
er.emy plane crashes and mysteri
ously explodes.
Koovak learns the identity of
the strange cargo and is pro
moted. At the McDonald Theater, the
Cinema Scope screen will con
tinue to carry the Technicolor
film, "Beneath the 12-Mile Reef,"
through March 27.
This is the spectacular under
water film about sponge harvest
ing, and includes many beautiful
scenes of the country off the
coast of Florida.
Co-stars are Terry Moore, Gil
bert Roland, Robert Wagner.
There is rivalry between the har
vesting ship crews, who are stnv
to outdo the others in their
harvest. Roland portrays Mike,
the captain of the "Aegli," and
Wagner is his son, Tony.
They go to the 12-mile reef to
gather valuable sponges, where

M.'ke's son, Pete died. On their
way, they run into trouble with
the Conchs, who are the English
fishermen off Key West.
Considerable bad luck torments
the crew, and Mike dies from the
bends suffered in an underwater
accident. Terry Moore plays the
part of the d.ughter of one of
the rival men.
There is excitement and color
in this film which is projected
onto the 40-foot-wide screen of
the McDonald.
Partridge to Command
Far East Air Forces
TOKYO UV-Gen. O. P. Wey-
land will turn over command of
Far East Air Forces to Gen.
Earle E. Partridge next Friday,
the Air Force announced.
Weyland has commanded
FEAF since May. 1951, through
out most of the Korean War.
Partridge led the Korean-based
5th Air Force in the war's early
months.
