Here is a design full of "different" ideas ... a house so practical
from both the builder's and homeowner's point of view . . . that it
was judged a prize-winner for excellence of design. Something brand
new is the louvered front opening of the breezeway, which ties house
and garage together as a unit, yet allows full play to summer breezes.
This, combined with attractive treatment at the rear, and the built
in barbecue, (fast becoming a standard item in today's home), makes
an outdoor living room of this area.
Another feature is the double bath arranged back-to-back, with one
unit private to the master bedroom. Built-in shower is extra large.
Kitchen work area bypasses back-to-front traffic. Convenience of base
ment stairway to service entrance is a definite plus. Floor area is
1,339 sq. ft. Architect is Herman H. York. Information on blue prints
and cost can be obtained by writing to Small Homes Guild, 82 W.
Washington, Chicago 2, 111.

Jolden Fleece is a new giantj
form of Celosia argentea, the plant
commonly known as Ostrich Plume
or Feathered Cockscomb. Intro
duced this year by the Bodgcrs of
California, Golden Fleece is the
result of more than two decades of
hybridization. The pure golden
plumes are hugo and graceful, on
long cutting stems, dozens of them
to a plant. A free-flowering cut-iand-comc-again
annual, Golden
Fleece germinates quickly, will
stand any amount of hot weather,
and seemingly ignores pests and
diseases. Under average conditions
it grows to a height of 30 inches.
with a 30" spread late in the sea
son. Because it is unusual and has a
"tropical" appearance, many land
scape gardeners and architects
have selected it as the "modern"
garden. Golden Fleece looks par
; ticularly well against the new
darker exterior house colors that
are becoming increasingly popular.
Celosia argentea, of which Gold
en Fleece is the ultimate develop
ment, originated in Mexico but ac
quired the popular name of Chinese
Wool-flower when in its comparat
ively undeveloped state as the
flowers looked like the small balls
of cashmere wool brought to market
in Tientsin. German plant breed
ers started working with Celosia
Argentea around the turn of the
century and the improved forms
they developed began to take the
shape and color of the comb of a
rooster, hence the name Cockscomb
or "Celosia Cristata". Other va
rieties acquired a plumed shape
and became known as Ostrich
Plume or "Celosia Plumosa" but
Cockscomb has become the most
widely used name for both types
and it is in this category that the
gardener will be most likely to
find Golden Fleece in the seed
racks.
The particular plants that made
Golden Fleece possible came from
an unusual hedge of Mexican
Celosia in a rural garden found in
Oklahoma during the early "thir
ties. The flowers had little color
nursery catalogs is indeed wel
come, because each one gives de
scriptions of new plants available
to the gardener. Many of the new
comers are annuals and perennials
which merit consideration. There
are also several flowering shrubs
offered that would enhance tbe
beauty of the springtime garden.
While the descriptions seem al
most as highly colored as the .il
lustrations, most of us will prob
ably add some new varieties to our
gardens.
Since many gardeners wish to
grow flowers which arc as colorful
in the house as in the garden,
consider (he new trysomic hi

coast gardeners happy last year.

GOLDEN FLEECE, newest form of the Ostrich Plume or l eathered
Cockscomb, provides glamorous foliage for landscapes or interior
arrangements. The graceful plumes of 20-21" stems may be dried
for winter arrangement use. It is a hardy annual that grows best
in full sun. Planting time is late spring or summer.
It seems that around the turn of
the century a couple of young cow
boys set off from the Indian Ter
ritory (later Oklahoma) in search
of fame and fortune in Argentina.
They wound up as Yankee Gauchos,
herding cattle on the Argentine
Pampas. In this occupation they
found much work, but scant fame,
and practically no fortune. After
several months both boys were
homesick but had just enough mon
ey between them for one to buy
passage back to the States. A
flip of a coin decided who should
get the stake and the passage home.
It was the one who won the toss
and returned to the States who had
planted the unusual Celosia, a find
he made on a later hunting trip to
Mexico. What happened to the
one who flipped the coin and lost?
but were extremely large. Inquir
ies about these plants revealed an
amazing little drama.
He got a job on a cattle boat going
to Africa, joined a travelling Wild
West show in Johannesburg and
made a big name for himself. He
travelled around the world before
he got back to the States. Gave up
cowpunching too, except he went
into vaudeville. His name was
Will Rogers.
A previous development from the
same stock as the Oklahoma plants
is Celosia Pampas Plume, available
in a broad color mixture of golds,
bronzes, coppers and reds. Pampas
Plume's name was, of course, in
spired by the saga of the two cow
boys who flipped a coin years ago
in the wild Pampas country of the
Argentine. First Pampas Plume,
and now Golden Fleece are respon
sible for the increasing popularity
of Plumbed Cockscomb, one of the
most graceful and interesting flow
ers that have been perfected
through the plant breeder's magic.
The relative advantages of in
door as compared with outdoor
storage tanks for fuel oil are anal
yzed by the Plumbing and Heating
Industries Bureau,
Tanks that arc buried outside are
usually of 550 or 1,000-gallon ca
pacity. In some western states,
tanks holding 675 gallons are used.
Basement tanks arc normally 275
gallon tanks. Sometimes two tanks
arc installed in basements in order
to increase storage capacity.
One of the chief advantages of
an outdoor tank is the greater ca
capacity provided. Another advan
tage is that the elimination of the
tanks from the basement makes
more room available for other
purposes.
On the other hand, to have a
tank buried underground costs

the sun is shining.
However, a new strain which re
mains open during the day may
be substituted if one wants day-and-night
color and fragrance.
This variety, called "New Sensa-i
lion," should be obtainable at the
better seed stores. In addition to
white, this nicotiana comes in
shades of crimson, bright scarlet,
rose, mahogany, violet and yellow.
There are also two new Shasta
daisies. The first one is

most cities, local ordinances
do not permit more than two 275
gallon tanks to be installed in a
basement. If more are to be in
stalled, they must be installed in
accordance with the regulations of
the National Fire Protection As
sociation. The thickness of tanks varies
with their- capacity. Tanks to be
installed underground must be
thoroughly coated on the outside
with tar, asphaltum, or other suit-
'Wirraljable rust-resisting paint. Care
should be taken to prevent cinders
from coming in contact with the
tank or piping. The combination of
cinders and moisture causes sul
phuric acid which accelerates the
corrosion of underground metals.
