Flooded premises probably have been contaminated with
water containing sewage, and careful steps should be taken to
avoid endangering health of citiiens, Lane County's health office
said Wednesday.

given advice nn what to do if wells have been covered by flood
waters or if flood water has approached within 100 feet of the
well, provided persons intend to use the water for drinking,
culinary or bathing purposes. His statement follows:
"It can he assumed that FLOOrtEn premises have been con
laminated with naler containing sewage. If your well has hern
covered hy flood waters, or if flood water has approached within
100 feet of Ihe well, these Instructions should he followed before
using Ihe water for drinking, culinary or bathing purposes:
(T.KAN AXn PI MP well until water runs clear.
STKRII.IZE: Add ordinary bleach such as "f'lnrnx" or
"Purex" to well as follows: One ounce nf bleach to every in
gallons of waler In well, or one pint of bleach to every 160
gallons of water in well. (Larger doses of bleach will not be
harmful.) Pump some of the mixture out of and bark Into Ihe
well, thoroughly rinsing the Interior walls of the well.
(Note: One cubic foot of water equals Hi gallons. A six-Inch-round
hole contains 114 gallons per foot of depth.)
HOLD: Allow mixture to remain in well 2 hours.
Pl'MP: After 24 hours pump well until free from chlorine
odors.

minutes before using for drinking, bathing or culinary purposes.
