Coburg's defending state cham
pions and McKenzie share the
Lane County B six-man lead after
the second round of action but the
big noise Friday in the loop came
from Mapleton where Triangle
Lake edged the Sailors, 5246.
Coburg opened the 1952 league
campaign by trouncing Mohawk,
49-13, and McKenzie walloped Sis
ters, 31-0, in a non-league en
counter. Crow, newcomer to the
league, originally was scheduled
to meet Lorane but claimed a for
feit victory since the latter failed
to enter the race.
Halfback Ralph Slayter tallied
five touchdowns, one on a 70-yard
gallup, and Quarterback Denny
Tonne drop-kicked five conver
sions in leading the Triangle Lake
triumph at Mapleton.
Toline's trusty toe provided the
difference as each team collected
seven touchdowns in the fray. Bob
Kneaper scored four times, once
on a 60-yard jaunt, to lead the
Sailors attack. Don Akers, Willis
Gould, and Bob York each added
a six-pointer for the losers.
Mapleton led 20-12 at halftime
in what appeared to be a fairly
conservative contest but the Lak
ers broke loose for four touch
downs in the third quarter and
the gap was too much for the
Sailors to overcome.
The battle was the initial six-
man action for the Mapleton squad
and marked the first time the
school had entered the race since
1948.
In the other league encounter,
Coburg's veteran crew rolled to a
34-0 halftime lead against the in
vading Indians and was never
threatened.
Frank Liltlejohn, Carl Stal
lings, and Clint Crownover each
tallied twice for the Broncs. Lyle
Dickens and Glenn scored in the
third quarter for Mohawk's only
damage.
Leland Broom collected four
touchdowns, including a 70-yard
punt return, in leading McKen
zie to an easy verdict over bis
ters. Don Fox contributed a touch
down and conversion to the Eagle
attack.
