Recruiting Staff
Eugene's Army and Air Force
recruiting station which a year ago
was staffed by 10 service people,
including a Wac and a civilian
clerk, has been chopped-nearly out
I of existenece in a service-wide
economy move.
The office, which recruits from
the southern half of Oregon was
coupled with an induction station
which only two years ago was re
processing dozens of recruits and
inductees each day.
Maj. Floyd Meador, formerly in
charge of recruiting and induction
here, is now in charge of the Phoe
nix, Ariz, recruiting area.
Capt. E. W. Hatfield, second in
command, is a prison officer on
Koje Island, off Korea. Warrant
Officer Ralph Brandt is stationed
at Ft. Leavenworth. M-Sgt. Harry
McDaniel is at McChord Field,
Wash-, and T-Sgt. Leonard Whis
senhunt is a recruiter in Portland.
Of the others who recently staffed
the local office, some have been
discharged and the present loca
tion of others is not known.

State Prison inmates made such
a hit with a couple of songs they
wrote for a prison show last
winter that now they're In busi
ness. They've picked up some finan
cial harking and the approval of
Warden Virgil O'M alley and have
turned out a half-dozen new
songs.
The two men are Seth Schwartz,
3.1. and Bob Nealy, 4fi.
Schwartz, serving his third
term for cheek forgery, has com
pleted four years of his current
20-yrir term. Nealy is on his
eighth term, this one for life on
an assault-wlth intent to kill con

of Mr. and Mrs. Arthqr Bassett of
Mill City, Ore., went to school the
first day of her life.
In the small hours the call came
to go to (he hospital and Bassett
began the drive with his wife
from Mill City to Salem Memorial
Hospital. The stork got impatient.
Just in front of the school at
Aumsville, several miles east of
Salem, a daughter was born to
them, with only the father in attendance.

portunity," seriously.
Miss Anna Schwarzenberg, born
Princess Anna von Schwarzenberg
in Bohemia when it was a part of
the Austro - Hungarian Empire,
came to America in 1948 and began
knitting sweaters.
Two years later she sold some
of them in the village store in
nearby Woodstock. Soon she re
ceived orders from a New York
specialty shop.
The business expanded and now
she has 70 women knitting at
home for her, making sweaters,
socks, scarves, dresses and shawls.

NEWTON, la. W Dive-bombing
bluejays are terrorizing the peo
ple of Newton.
Several youngsters have been
badly frightened when they were
"buzzed" by the jay and one was
severely scratched by repeated at
tacks. Police killed two of the birds
and thought the attacks wero end
ed. But a few days later Don Jen
nings, Newton photographer, was
picking cherries and an infuriated
jay nicked him twice on the head.
Jennings killed the bird with an
air pistol.
