Veterans of the McKenzie River report more big fish
feeding during the past week or ten days than at any time
for years definite Indication that Chris Jensen's plan is pay
ing off. The resident biologist advocated a regulation prohibiting
the "killing" of rainbow trout 14 inches or over in length, on the
theory that the brood trout would provide better natural propaga
tion than anything hatcher-planted trout could do in restoring the
McKenzie to near its status of some 20 years ago. . . .
Carl Baker, resident of the river who shares his time with his
filberts, fishing, guiding, and training his new pointer, said that
on a short trip earlier this week, he turned back three fish in
one riffle. . . . Despite intermittent showers Tuesday, four
anelers did real well on the McKenzie. . . . Tom Walker of New
York City and Bob Bertsch fished with Baker and Bill Neal of
Atlanta, Georgia, and the writer fished with Dick Helfrich. . . .
Both groups boated seven fish, averaging between nine and HVi
Inches Neal netted the largest in the riffle Just above Kennies,
the very first time he had attempted to handle a dry-fly outfit. . . .
Both Bertsch and the writer turned over several fish that would
have gone over the 14-inch limit late that evening, in the deep
curia In front of Walt Brown's cabin; the big trout were popping
all over, apparently taking a small gray or blue fly. . . . Most of
the fish were taken on a small caddis, goofer, blue, gray, red
and coachman. . . .
It Is a pretty good bet that McKenzie fishing will be spoiled
during the next few weeks when airplane sprayers open their
annual attack on the spruce budworms. . .. Last season, for
weeks after the spraying operations, fishing on the McKenzie was
terrible.

. . . Two-day limit catches of trout were taken at Tahkenitch by
Mrs. Guy Day of Drain and her son and son-in-law, . ,. Dick

Willamette Just below Lookout Point dam. . . . The fish meas
ured S3 inches. ...
Barney Cable took the largest trout of the season in Gold Lake
last weekend, measuring 21 inches. . . .
Pishing Winchester Bay near Gardiner for striped bass, Clyde
Laufer and Carl Lund both hooked and released sturgeon. They
were using 45-pound test braided nylon line, using live herring
as bait, . . . Laufer caught one about 4V4 feet in length and Lund
had one that was estimated at mora than 6 feet.
Virgil Poissant and family, wife and son, had good fishing at
Crane Prairie last weekend. The first day they caught 15 and
kept only four for the evening meal. The next day they brought
home a limit, besides turning back 17. The average, taken on var
ious spinners and lures, was about 12 inches, the largest 17 inches
and about 2i pounds rainbows and eastern brook.

The leader in the Monterey Peninsula fishing derby not only
has the inside track for the Austin A-40 four-door sedan with a
40-pound, 8-ounce Chinook salmon, but he recently won a weekly
award for the smallest octopus one-half ounce in weight.
k The Willamette Valley Retriever Club will hold a joint
meeting and picnic trial with the Portland club Sunday, with
Eugene members invited. Two stakes will be run, a derby and
open all-age. The event starts at 8 a.m. at the usual location leave
Highway 89 at the Jefferson overpass junction north of Albany and
turn left at the gravel plant road. . . .
Ducks Unlimited report a good early hatch. ... In Manitoba,
one 47-acre project shows 126 breeding pairs, a 10-acre area 95
pairs, and part of a 90-acre project indicated 175 pairs of family

champion Chitwood troupe will
compete with Bill Ward's Cana
dian Aces, Vancouver, B. C, last
years' runner-up; Angel Lopez
Diablos Del Timon. Mexico
Dutch Schnitzer's Circus of Death,
Vienna, Austria, Lucky Walters'
Hollywood stuntmen, and Aki
Kimura's Dragon Drivers, Tokyo,
Japan, in a score of events.
Included on the competition
program will be broadjumplng
new automobiles for height and
distance in an attempt to break
the present world record, of 88
feet four inches, held by Joie
Chitwood and set in Soldiers
Field, Chicago. The leap will be
made each time over two or

Crash-roll overs, four entrants
trying to see how many times
they can crash a car over and
what distance they can get, is an
other competitive event, as is the
precision driving. Points in these
will decide the winner of the In
ternational Stuntmen's Association
gold trophy and $10,000 purse.

by ISA and its rules will pre
vail. In addition to this, the Chitwood
show will present such special
events as the head-on crash of two
stock cars while the driven re
main at the wheel and crash cars
over, while Lucky Walters will top
off the thrill circus by blowing
himself up in a casket with 20
