Rainbow Falls
Hike Planned
By Obsidians
Rainbow Falls, on the northern
boundary of the Three Sisters
Wilderness Area, will be the goal
of the Obsidians Sunday,
The trip as planned includes an
easy hike on the Louise Creek
Trail to the top of the falls, one
of the highest and least known
falls in the Oregon Cascades, then
to the top of the falls and on a
mile farther to the source of
Louise Creek. The return will be
made" to Rainbow Falls, then a
descent of a thousand feet to the
foot of the Cascades.
The hike will afford several ex
cellent scenic viewing points, the
Obsidians say. '
The Obsidians will leave Eugene
City Hall at 8 a.m. DST, and drive
up the McKenzie River past Mc
Kenzic Bridge, leaving the high
way at the Foley Ridge Logging
Road. After an eight mile trip on
the logging road, the group will
debark at Rainbow Vantage Point
for the hike, to be led by Karl
W. Onthank.

Kefauver Sees
Victory for Self
WASHINGTON (P) Sen.
Estes Kefauver of Tennessee has
Isaid he won "a great victory"
!in Washington and Oregon last
jweck in his quest for the Demo
cratic presidential nomination.
I Kefauver took issue in an inter
view wiih the assertion of Sen.
Robert S. Kerr of Oklahoma, an
other presidential aspirant, that
Kefauver had received a "stun
ning setback" when his forces lost
an attempt to win an endorse
ment from the Washington state
Democratic convention Saturday.
"The fact that I won six-to-one
over the combined votes of Gov.
Adlal E. Stevenson of Illinois and
Associate Justice William O.
Douglas in Oregon and have the
support of more than half of the
Washington delegation constitutes,
a great victory for me and not
any setback," Kefauver declared.
An informal poll of the Wash
ington, delegation credited Ke
fauver with 12Vz of the state's
22 presidential nominating votes.
Russians Tell
Big Fish Story
LONDON (U.R) Moscow Radio
has sounded a few loud sneers at
the achievements of capitalist
fishermen. In Russia, a broadcast
said, everybody fishes better.
The big fish story was set off
by the return of a Soviet whaling
flotilla after seven months in the
Antarctic. The Russian fisherman,
the broadcast said, had accounted
for "great achievements."
"Vasily Tupikov, for example,
killed 372 whales. A hero of
.Socialist Labor, Afansy Purgin,
I killed 333 and Georry Ofsyanni
;kov, 319," Moscow boasted, adding:
j "The Norwegian harpooner, Ma
(rius Jakobsen, of 20 years stand
ing and the best harpooner in the
capitalist countries, has during one
season killed only 151 whales.
! "His record," Moscow calmly
added, "was beaten by all Soviet
I harpooners."
