Landlords Oppose
Federal Rent Curbs
WASHINGTON (U.R Land
lords urged Congress' Tuesday to
let federal rent controls die June
30 or at least confine them to
"critical defense housing areas."
The latter proposal would strip
rent ceilings from Minneapolis,
Pittsburgh, and a number of other
major communities where they
have been in effect for about 10
years.
Spokesmen for the landlords
said in testimony before the House
control is "morally wrong, eco
nomicaJly unjustified" and creates
"artificial housing shortages."
Unemployment Hits
New Postwar Low
WASHINGTON UP) Non
farm employment went up 280,000
between March and April, largely
as a result o seasonal construc

Statistics reports.
Total unemployment was 1,600,
000 in early April, a postwar low
for that time of year.
The number of employes in in
dustries not connected with farm
ing was 46,200,000 higher than a
year earlier. Over the year ending
last month, the number of produc
tion workers in manufacturing
plants declined by 410,000 to 12,-;
700,000.

Four sealed metal boxes left in
the arctic wastes by members of
Admiral Robert E. Peary's polar
expedition 43 years ago may con
tain "priceless historical docu
ments" which should be removed
to a museum, Lt. Col. William P.
Benedict said Monday.
Benedict, of Paradise, Calif.,
and Lt. Col. Joseph O. Fletcher, of
Shawnee, Okla., spotted Peary's
cache while making a low-level
flight over the ice shelf border-
ling Ellesmere Island north of
j Greenland on May 4, the day be
fore they made their historic land
ing at the North Pole.
j BENEDICT immediately set the
C-47 plane down at Cape Colum
, bia and the crew walked to the
I cache a mile away. It was marked
;by broken sled runners set upright
'in a tripod arrangement.
They were believed to be the
! first persons to visit the spot in
43 years.
I In his first interview since re
turning from the arctic Sunday,
Benedict said he gave orders to
his crewmen not to disturb the
four metal boxes packed inside
wooden crates.
He said he was convinced the
cache should be left intact until
it is removed to a museum and
that it should be replaced by
permanent monument to the arc
tic explorer.
Benedict urged that either Can
ada or the United States send a
plane to pick up the boxes, which
are on Canadian territory.
"This should be done as soon as
Electric Motor
Shifts in Hurry
CLEVELAND (fV) A 500-horse-power
electric motor which
can shift forward to reverse in
eight tenths of a second may speed
the coming of push button fac
tories. The motor was hailed as "the
beginning of the power for the
automatic factory" Monday by
reliance Electric & Manufacturing
Co. which developed it.
An electronic control can stop
the big motor in three revolutions
and send it spinning in the op
posite direction.
It is this feature that puts the
motor high in plans for factories
which would use a minimum of
machinery and. a minimum of
workers.
Reliance already has sold three
of the motors, two for punch
presses and one for a highspeed
rod mill cutoff. .Each cost about
50 thousand dollars.

A SIGN OF THE TIME Crew members of a U. S. Air
Force C-47 that made history's first successful landing at
the geographic North Pole, examine a signpost built by
Adm. Peary's party in 1909. A few feet away was a cache
of supplies left by the early explorers. Lt. Col, Joseph
O. Fletcher is at left and Pilot Lt. Col. William P. Ben

possible," he said. "The contain-!
ers are badly weathered now and
definitely won't last another 50,
years."
He said he had no idea what!
the boxes contained, but pointed
out that Peary states in his book
"The North Pole" that documents'
concerning, his 1909 expedition
were left in the polar regions.
. "If those documents are in the
boxes, they should be removed as
soon as possible because of their
historical significance," Benedict
said.
Members of his crew were!
mystified by the appea'rance of a
weatherbeaten signpost located a
few feet from the metal boxes.
The top of the sign, bearing the
legend "C. Columbia, June R.
in""" vinr) fallen to one side and
it appeared that someone years
later had wrapped a piece of wire
around it to keep it from falling
down altogether. However, there
were no signs of anyone having
been there or of anything missing
from the cache. Benedict said the
group decided the appearance of
the sign was deceiving.
HE POINTED out that the date
on the- sign did not coincide with
that given in Peary's book June
6, 1906, indicating that Peary was
confused by the continuous day
light in these latitudes during the
spring and summer.
Benedict said his navigator was
astounded to learn that Peary had
accurately computed the distance
from the cache to the pole 413
miles.
..c;ore leaving Cape Columbia,
the Air Force group left a ski at
the cache on which . Colonel
Fletcher carved the inscription:
Visited by the crew of Air force
plane 665 on May 4 one day
after landing on North Pole."
Peary used the Cape Columbia'
camps as a supply point, anai
