Forest fires roared over Kastern
woodlands during a warm, dry and
wipdy week-end and many big
blazes still were out of control
Sunday night.
In New England, New York, New
Jersey and Maryland flames
roared through valuable timber,
burned outbuildings and some
somes, injured firefighters, and
hampered heavy Sunday traffic.
AN ENTIRE village in Rhode
Island was evacuated as fire
fighters failed to turn back vi
cious fire, traveling at explosive
speed through a stand of pine.
Apparatus was called from other
fires by radio to make a stand
against the blaze.
The fire which imperilled the
village on the Shannock Hill road
was one of several big blazes still
raging in Rhode Island.
The state's veteran fire fighters
said the epidemic, with 10 major
fires and innumerable smaller
ones burning 6000 acres in fi day,
was the worst in the state in their
memory.
VOLUNTEER fire departments
had no sooner turned one big
forest fire away from the Atomic
Energy Commission's Brookhaven
Laboratories on Long Island when
another fire began to creep toward
the big research center Sunday.
A fire in the Northern Berk
shires in Massachusetts damaged
Ashintully Villa, a 35-room show
place once owned by the late Robb
de Peyster Tytus, famed archeolo
gist. Meanwhile urban fire took the
lives of four children at Ellicott
City, Md., and a 32-year-old war
veteran at South Salem, Mass.
At Fairview, N.J., fire raged
Sunday in 4000 tons of baled paper
at the Southern Trucking Co. ter
minal, and a fire official said it
"may burn for days."

Of Disorderly, Aimless Man

NEW YORK (P) There are
only two classes in the world
neat people and the people the
criticize.
The thing that always has puz
zled me about neat people is their
intolerance. They are reformers at
heart. They are never satisfied
merely with being neat them
serves. They want everybody else
to be neat, too.
This is a violation of individual
rights. A person is as legally free
to be disorderly as he is to be
neat, so long as he doesn't in
fringe on the liberty of others.
For my part, I can see more ad
vantages in being disorderly than
being neat. Neatness isn't always
a virtue. Most people aren t neat
beoause they really have a rest
less passion to put everything in
pigeonholes. They believe there is
a place for everything and every.
thing should be in its place, They
reel that life is like a bingo game!
If they keep putting the right but
tons on the right numbers bingo!
THE TROUBLE with this
theory is life just doesn't operate
that way. To get the most out of
living you have to be a connois.
seur of chaos as well as an advo
cate of order.
There are some situations and
experiences you can't solve with
a platitude or tag with a label.
They don't fit into patterns, and
when a neat person is faced with
such a situation he is defeated by
it and sometimes destroyed by it.
Life has a wonderful, sprawling,
aimless quality that only -a dis
orderly person can appreciate.

thunder and lightning. They tend
to make a neat person nervous, as
he nates to see the sky disrupted,
But a good, rousing thunderstorm
is a source of poetic joy to the dis.

THE NEAT MAN is frustrated
from birth, because his goal is lnv
plete order. The only really orderly

thing in the world is death, and
me most disorderly tnine is life.
The closer the neat man comes
to his goal that is, the more he
catalogs his daily life the more
bored he is likely to become. The
disorderly man can never become
too bored because he never knows
what will happen to him next.
When the neat man goes to his
desk to get out a letter, he knows
in dreary certainty just where he
will find it. It Is a dull routine.
To the disorderly oerson. however.
looking for a letter in the mare's
nest atop his desk is a real ad
venture.
Gingerly, he pokes at the lavers
of debris that resemble the leaning
tower of Pisa. He paws through
old letters and re-reads them. He
comes upon some theater ticket
stubs and recalls the play. He finds
a pair of old socks he thought had
been lost.
It may take him half an hour to
find the right letter, but mean
while he's been somewhere. Hes
lived over a lot of memories, had
a pleasant little visit into the past.
He emerges refreshed by his small
voyage of discovery. But where
has the neat man been? he's been
only to a dry, cold file. He has
learned nothing.
I ONCE KNEW a lady whose
secret joy was going, through her
husband's pockets at night. But
