Governor McKay Urges Suppoi
For Register-Vote Committee
SALEM (Spocial) Men and
women who (all to vote aro not
keeping faith with themselves or
with past and future generations
of Americans, Gov. Douglas Mc
Kay declared Thursday.
Governor McKay made this
view known in his statement des
ignating the week of March 23-29
for observance as Voter Registra
tion Week throughout Oregon. He
expressed alarm and regret over
Oregons record as the poorest of
all western states in the matter of
voter participation. At the same
time he commended the volunteer
Oregon Register and Vote com
mittee on its campaign "to guar
antee a stronger, better-governed
United States."
The full text of the governor's
statement follows: "Americans
who neglect to vote are shirking
their responsibility as citizens and,
in a very real sense, are betraying
the generations that gave them
this privilege, as well as the gen
erations that are yet to come.
'1 THINK It Is a sad commen
tary on our evaluation of our free
dom that over one-third1 of all
Orcgonians entitled to vote are too
lethargic or too lazy to exercise
this franchise. Percentaso-w se.

of all western states. .,
"It Is highly regrettable, in i
: opinion, that a campaign has
be undertaken to get people
register and then vote. But sir
lit is quite evident that a cai

"1 nope nint every potent
voter shall be reached, shall r

each person to assume persor
responsibility in order that tl :
