Chances Fading

tle University Chieftains, their
i hopes for a berth in the western
regional NCAA cage tourney dim
med, Thursday were awaiting a
possible bid to the National In
vitational Tourney.
The. NIT committee was sched
uled to meet in New York Thurs
day to pick five teams for the 12
team events. ,
Wednesday, Bill Fenton, S.U.
athletic director, said he had been
told by Reeves Peters, a member
of the selection committee of the
NCAA, tourney, that the Chief
tains "are not seriously being con
sidered for a berth.
Reeves added, however, that
the Chieftains were not entirely
out of the running for one of the
at-la'rge spots available. The
NCAA western regional tourney
is slated for Mar. 21-22 at Cor-
vallis, Ore. The finals are sched
uled for a week late at Seattle.
Fenton aald Peters told him five
teams were considered leading
candidates for the two at-large
spots available.. He named them
as Drake, Oklahoma City, St.
Mary's San Francisco and Santa
Clara.

Moore, veteran light heavyweight
challenger, won a unanimous de
cision over Jimmy Slade of New
York Wednesday.
It was a clearcut victory for
Moore, although he ran into un
expected trouble in the tenth and
final round. In that round Slado
forced him into the ropes and
scored repeatedly with a barrage
of rights and lefts to the head.
Slade won the "round, easily but
Moore had cinched the decision.
In the earlier rounds Slade
fought from a crouch and was1 an
easy target for hard left handed
jabs which were Moore's most ef
fective weapons.
