Wallgren Eyes
Door to Politics
WASHINGTON 17P Mon C.
Wallgren, former Washington
State governor and U. S. senator,
said Wednosday there is still a
possibility he may run for elec
tive office in his home state.
"I plan to go back to the state
in a little while and see how
things stand," he told a reporter,
"but right now I'm not very en
thused about it."
Wallgren, a personal friend of
President Truman, visited him at
the White House Tuesday. He de
clined to say what they talked
about.
Wallgren resigned last fall as
chairman of the Federal Power
Commission. He has been men
tioned as a possible candidate for
governor, U. S. senator or con
gressman.
Foods Prices Rise
NEW YORK flJ.P.) Wholesale
food prices on the Dun & Brad
street Index rose three cents to
$6.60 during the week ended Wed
nesday, It was announced Thurs
day. The index compared with $7.31
for the same week in 1951, when
the peak for the year was hit. It
now stands at 9.7 per cent below
a year ago, but 10.7 per cent over
the pre-Korea level of $5.96.
Until he was convinced that
conservative cutting of Christmas
trees beneficially thinned dense
young forests, Theodore Roosevelt
would not allow them in the
White House.

From railroad clerk to glass es

Press Conference,
JAMES F. POPE was born in
Zebulon, Georgia, 14 Sept, 1900.
After Emory U., Atlanta, his first
job was that of railroad clerk.
Then he switched to glass esti
mator (whatever that is) for the
Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. He
worked two years as auto sales
man before he got a job with the
Atlanta Journal as reporter . . .
in 1926.
Pope rose to the position of
managing editor, then went to
the Lousiville (Ky.) Courier-Journal,
for which he is executive edi
tor. During the war, he took a six
month leave of absence to work in
the Office of Censorship.
Pope won his national reputa
tion not only as a fighting edi
tor, but also as a vigorous cham
pion of freedom of information.
He is chairman of the Committee
on Freedom of Information of the
American Society of Newspaper
Editors.
In that capacity he is one of
the leaders in the battle to pre
vent government news security
from becoming censorship.
POrE BELIEVES that govern
ments have become so enormous
and their Dowers of news-control
so diverse and insidious, that the
basic facts reauired for souna
judgment have become harder
and harder to identify and to
capture.
Pope says: "We knock ourselves
out covering the Capitol and the
White House, and a few news
obvious departments like State
and Defense. But we know little
nr nnthins of all the vast organ
icmc that surround and influence
the conduct of our affairs and-the
expenditure of billions of our
money.
" . . Mhere are) many instan'
ces in which the people's right to
know has been circumscribed or
wiped out by 'regulation. Almost
all the administrative news of our
government is so controlled.
Pofe reports that the "cult of
secrerv" is not restricted 10 wtsir
ington; that there are many cases
of news suppression by state and
local officials.
