Doubling the lamb crop by in
ducing two breedings a year has
long been a goal in agriculture.
More than a year ago, Armour
and Company of Chicago reported
some success in getting ewes to
breed twice a year by using a sex
hormone, gonado trophin. These
experiments have continued.
DAVIDSON SAID ECP also has
overcome temporary sterility in
cows, and that there is evidence
it can often overcome barrenness
in sows, or speed up the time when
sows can be bred again. Sterility
in cows and pigs costs farmers
and consumers millions of dollars
a year.
The hormone also has worked
well in trials on beef cattle, horses
and dogs, Dr. Davidson said.

glars raided his recreation center.
The itemized $16 statement in
cluded all the tools police found
abandoned in the firm, Including
a carpenter's level.
"I guess they bought them in
my name because they planned to
leave them," Seilcr said, "but
what in the world would a burglar
do with a carpenter's level?"

who hung the tag of "bafflegab"
on complex governmental lan
guage has received an award for
coining the word,
But in the doing he got tangled
up in his "gobbledegook" defini
tion of his brain-child. He forgot
two words in his 28-word explana
tion of what "bafflegab" language
means.
Three-Way Honor
The man who got the award
was Milton A. Smith, assistant
general counsel for the U. S.
Chamber of Commerce.
The donor of the award was the
Bellingham, Wash., Herald.
The man who presented it was
Michael V. DiSalle, rotund price
stabilizer.'
That was fitting because the
Office of Price Stabilization was
Smith's target when he coined
"bafflegab" in writing about an
OPS order. Ho did so in the cham
ber's weekly publication, Wash
ington Report.
'Deserves an Award'
The Bellingham Herald noted it

the winter maneuver, Exercise

winter maneuver, Exercise Snbw

The five-man team from the
Army Medical Research Labora
tory supervised treatment of
frostbite victims last year in Jap
an. The troops will be examined
beforehand and those found sus
ceptible to frostbite will not be
exposed to dangerous extremes of
cold. The team will also indoc
trinate troops in precautionary
cold weather safety measures.

was disclosed this week. Both

"Most motorists have been edu
cated to the point where they will

Exposure Death
KLAMATH FALLS (P) Pol
ice here are investigating the ex
posure death of a 24-year-old
Negro woman.
The body of the woman, Aire
Rogers, was found lying face down
in the snow near Hatfield, Ore.,
south of here near the Oregon
California border.

said she probably died about 6 a.
m. Sunday.

Food Price Declines
Lower Wholesale Index
WASHINGTON (P) Declines
in farm products and foods shoved
wholesale prices down slightly
during the week ended Jan. 15.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics,
reporting a 0.4 per cent drop, list
ed smaller decreases in textiles
and chemicals. Biggest increases
were for calves, hogs, potatoes at
Chicago and some inedible fats
and oils.
The index, 176.4 per cent of the
1926 average, was 12.4 per cent
above the pre-Korean average but
1.9 below that of one year ago.
Professor Undertakes
Research Project Tour
A six months tour and research
project that will carry him into
the major colleges of the nation
has been started by Dr. Francis
E. Dart, assistant professor of
physics at the University of Ore
gon.
Dr. Dart, working under a grant
from the Ford Foundation, will
continue a project working out of
a course in physical science for
non-science majors, to be offered

Woman Sends Money

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (fl) Mrs.
Harold Parker, of Holbrook, Mass.
has been having trouble recently
telling money and checks from
mere coupons.
She sent in 300 premium cou
pons to the Brown and Williamson
Corp. for a tablecloth. Then she
got worried and sent the company
a letter asking if they had found

Freight Rates Granted
Boost of 6 Per Cent
SALEM (JP) Oregon Railroads
were granted permission Friday
to increase their freight rates
within the state by six per cent.
Public Utilities Commissioner
Charles H. Heltzel, who granted
the increase, said it is similar to
the Interstate Commerce Com
mission order of last August which
increases interstate railroad freight
rates by six per cent west of the
Mississippi River.

submarine fleet is a potent war
force, says Secretary of the Navy
Kimball, and has grown from 50
to 300 or 400, compared with the
U.S. Navy's gain from 70 to 100.
