Mighty River's
Source Found
In Venezuela
I NEW YORK (U.B The Ameri
Ican Geographic Society said Fri
day an expedition found that a
spring at the base of a cliff was
the true source of the mighty Or
inoco River, second largest in
South America.
A letter to the society from
Caracas, Venezuela, gave details
of the discovery of the long-sought
headwaters by seven explorers and
a snfari of 30 native porters.
The information was radioed to
Caracas by the explorers last Nov.
28, one day after the spring was
discovered at the foot of a 248-foot
escarpment jutting from a 2630
foot mountain.
The expedition reported it scaled
the mountain and hacked a large
clearing in a jungle on the broad
summit. Names of the two French
and five Venezuelan explorers
along with those of the chief of
staff of the Venezuelan army and
four Venezuelan cabinet members
were engraved on a cement post
erected on the site.

Statement
Abe Bangs, owner of the Bangs
Hotel, has asked this paper to
state that his hotel was not im
plicated at all in the recent con
viction of Dorothy Farrcll for
lewd cohabitation.
Mrs. Farrell and Arnold Ellof
son registered as man and wife,
Bangs stated, and since they had
luggage, they were given a room
as is customary in all hotels in
Oregon.
The hotel makes every effort to
guard against this sort of thing,
Bangs said.
Fire Chief Raises Objections
To Recent 'Adverse Publicity'
COTTAGE GROVE Fire Chief
Ernest Shipley asserted Thursday
the fire department has been re
ceiving "adverse publicity" and
that the public is getting the im
pression firemen are "lazy."
Shipley referred to publicity re
ceived in a recent council meeting
when councilmen discussed the
question, "Who is going to stoke
the city hall furnace at night?"
Several councilmen felt firemen
should stoke the furnace during
the night so the building would be
warm when regular employes
came to work in the morning.
Councilmen then turned the fur
nace heating problem over to the
fire department.
Shipley said Thursday the mat
ter has been settled for two weeks.
Irving IOOF
To Give Dance
IRVING A "Hardtimes Dance"
sponsored, by the local Odd Fel
lows and Rcbekahs will be held at
the Irving School Saturday eve
ning, Dec. 22. Women are to wear
prints, and men overalls. Kings
ley's Serenaders will supply the
music. Admission prices are:
Adults 75 cents, teenagers 50
cents.
Odd Fellows in charge are Rus
sell Johnson, chairman, Earl
Woods, Lowell Graves, Harry
Hatfield and Jupe Holmes. Re-
bckahs serving refreshments in
clude Mrs. A. J. Miglioretto,
chairman, Mrs. Arthur Lund and
Jack Lee. The public is invited.
"The assistant police chief and I
worked out a solution whereby
firemen will stoke the furnace
during daylight hours and police
radio operators will keep the fire
going during the night."
The chief then said the public
has been getting the wrong im
pression how the department op
erates. "Lots of people think we
have five or six paid men, but
we only have three. Yet these
three have five pieces of equip
ment to handle."
The chief explained each paid
man is on duty 24 hours and off
24 hours and works 72 hours a
week. "And each regular answers
the fire bell even on his day off."
The question has been ' asked
why can't firemen work eight
hour shifts?" Shipley said from
the standpoint of efficiency an
eight hour shift would not be
practical. He said firemen would
miss too many drills and that gen-
eral department operation would
be hampered.
