Gorky has returned to northwest
mat wars after a successful in
vasion of Hollywood and Los An
geles. "I'm loaded for bear and look
ing for trouble." That was the
wire sent to Matchmaker Don i
Owen early this week, and the
local impresario said, "I have a i
guy who will give Gorky plenty j
of trouble, wrapped up in Christ
mas trimmings," Owen said. He
was thinking of Jack ORellly,
the formidable Australian cham
pion who has been a torrid cam
paigner all fall.
Soldat has teen wrestling In
the south under the name of "Al
Smith," because of the fear of
possible race riots. Soldat. how
ever, wears his Russian robes and
claims that he Is a White Russian.
It was O'Reilly who claimed hp
had run both Soldat and Ivan out
ofthe northwest but the Gorky'r
weren t aware of O'Reilly's boast.
"The Siberian wolf leap will give
the answer," Soldat remarked.
The O'Reilly-Gorky match is
one that has been awaited for
many months by local fans and a
capacity crowd appears inevit
able. It will headline the full
program at the Armory arena
Saturday night.
Owen has arranged a sensation
al supporting program. The semi
final features Herb Parks, the
Canadian titleholder who has
challenged the winner. He must,
however, first meet and beat
Ralph Alexander, a rough and
tough newcomer from Dayton,
unio.
A special bout will mark the
debut of colorful Yorg Cretorian,
hairy Romanian who sports 12
inch mustachios. The shorf, stocky
grappler, a teammate of Kurt Von
Poppenheim in several team tilts
in Washington, will meet Bud
Rappell, Seattle youngster who
was impressive last week in beat
ing Bob DeMarce.
