CROW Quite a lot of damage
was done in this part of the county
by the recent wind storm. Tele
phone service was out until the
last of the week.
A garage fell in on two cars at
the Holeman place. Fruit trees
were up-rooted and both large
and small trees were blown over
on fences around the pastures and
fields. People are busy and will
be for some time clearing the trees
off fences to keep their stock In.

of hours wind, rain, sleet and snow
and freezing temperatures were
experienced Tuesday, Dec. 4
Trees were crashing to the ground
at quick intervals. Two fell
across the road by Ray Holbrook's
and one fell across the road and
across the highline on the hill
near O. C. Lamb's. There was no
electricity for a part of two days
and a night so the faithful old
kerosene lamps and candles came
off the sholf but wasn't the light
dim!
Out the windows one could see
branches flying several hundred
feet before they fell. Big patches
of moss would be lifted from oak
trees and float through the sky
in a wierd ghostly show.
I The snow, covering the chuck
Ihole in the road made it look
smooth but the driver and passen
gers felt all the bumps just the
same.
: The dyerbok, an African ante
: lope, when aware that it is ob
served, will crouch in the grass
! as if to lie down, then crawl away
for several yards and make a dash
for safety.

Manual Training Shop
LOWELL James Carmlchial,
shop teacher, was authorized by
the school board at their last meet
ing to enlarge the shop. A wall
will be torn out to utilize more of
the basement. The clascss can
then be advanced into industrial
arts. The work will be done over
Christmas vacation by Carmichial
and students.
A candy vending machine was
installed in the school Nov. 27, by
Mrs. W. A. Henderson of Eugene.
A new electric range, clothes dry
er and washer and refrigerator
will soon replace the old ones.
They will be purchased on the
"school plan" from a Eugene firm
School busses will be allowed to
transport students to and from all
scheduled games to rescind the
earlier ruling of the school board.
The "inches morgue" kept by
Carol Woolsey of journalism class
has revealed Nancy Steelman, edi
tor of the school paper "The
Broadcaster" wrote the most in
ches in the second six weeks, Car
ol Moore, assistant editor was sec
ond and Peter Dory, boys sports,
was third.

Lytle Boosted
To Salem Job
SALEM (VP) K. D. Lytle. di
vision state highway engineer at
Roseburg, was appointed Wednes
day as assistant construction en
gineer for the commission, State
Highway Engineer R. H. Baldock
announced.
Lytle will take over his new job
next Tuesday. His headquarters
will be in Salem.
Replacing Lytle at Roseburg
will be Tom Edwards.
Lytle is being transferred here
to help direct the increased high
way building program.

A fisherman named Fisher, living
in a neighboring cottage, caught
a fish. Fisher didn't like fish, so
he gave tho catch, a pike, to an
other neighbor named Pike. .

Firestone Heir Dies

Firestone, 50, econd ion of the
late Harvey S. Firestone, founder
of the Firestone Tire and Rubber
Co., died Wednesday at his home
here.
Firestone had suffered i pro
longed Illness.
Survivors Include a son, Russell,
Jr., of Dallas, Texas.
