Arco Reactor May Multiply Atomic Fuel
WASHINGTON (U.R Con
gressional authorities hailed as an
atomic "landmark" Saturday a
new kind of nuclear furnace which
experts said could multiply A
bomb raw materials 100-fold.
The furnace, or reactor, is the
"most advanced" thus far desiened
and is now operating at the
Atomic Energy Commission's vast
testing range near Arco, Ida.
Report Released
Intimations of what the Arco
reactor may accomplish were dis
closed in a report issued Friday
by the House-Senate Atomic En
ergy Committee. It is a "breeder",
by which is meant a nuclear
furnace which produces more at
omic fuel than it consumes.
In other parts of its report the
committee said:
1. The U.S. atomic project '
should manifest "greater boldness'
and more scientific and technical i
if the stakes appear high enough.
2. "Most far-reaching progress"
in development of new atomic
weapons during the past two years
has strengthened the country's
strategic and tactical ability to de
ter or defeat aggression.
3. The supply of uranium the
only currently exploited atomic
raw material "has substantially
improved and promises to improve
still further."
4. A second atomic weapons la
boratory should be built to ease
the mushrooming burden of work
on the Los Alamos, N.M., lab. The
AEC already is planning a new
laboratory and will ask money for
it in the next session of Congress.
The Arco breeder "went critical"
started operating a few weeks
ago and is "a kind of landmark,"
the committee said, because it
captures from the Canadian re
search reactor at Chalk River, Ont.
the distinction of being the world's
"most advanced."
Biff Waste
In all non-breeding reactors,
such as the vast production piles
at Hanford, Wash., there is a net
loss of atomic fuel. That is bad
because the kind of uranium that

can be used as a fuel or explosive
exists in the ratio of only one part
in 140 of natural uranium.
In a breeder pile, otherwise
wasted atomic agents would be
used to convert more non-fissionable
uranium into explosive Plu
tonium than is presently possible.
That in itself would multiply auto
matically the potential stockpile
of atomic explosives.
AFL Labors
In Civil War
PONTIAC, Mich. (TP) The
AFL picketed the AFL because
the AFL didn't like the AFL's
hiring of non-union labor.
Two pickets from the Build
ing Tradesmen and Carpenters
local 998, of Berkeley, marched
in front of the Pontiac-Oakland
Federation of Labor temple
while unaffiliated workers put a
new roof on the building.
The roof was completed at S
p.m., and the pickets withdrew.
A spokesman for the federa
tion said the non-union roofers
were hired by the roofing con
tractor, who had promised that
union labor would be used for
the job.
