PREVIEWS
An adult social comedy and a
colorful Technicolor musical-com
edy highlight this week's bookings
in Eugene.
"Texas Carnival," the musical,
follows a typical pattern of song
interspersed with fast-paced hu
mor, and the usual moonlight ro
mantic scenes added for good
measure. But it is none-the-less
entertaining.
The story tells of a moneyless
carnival barker (Red Skelton) and
his partner (Esther Williams) who
operate a "dunk-the-girl" booth
in a small carnival in Texas.
Cattleman
The pair gets mistaken for a
drunken, but rich cattleman
(Kcenan Wynn) and his sister.i
and are forced to lead his life to
ent. Esther Williams falls in love
with the cattleman's foreman, and
he with her.
One spectacular scene has
F.sther apparently swimming over,
through and around the furnish
ings in the foreman's hotel suite.
"Texas Carnival" starts Sunday
at the Hciling.
"People Will Talk"
The social comedy, "People
Will Talk," is the story of a fa
mous doctor who marries one of!
his patienfs after her attempted'
suicide. The doctor later quashes J
a would-be expose conceived by
an envious fellow professional.
Starring Cary Grant and Jeanne
Crain, the film is conceded to be
a provocative and entertaining
comedy-drama, according to sev
eral reviewers. Based on the Ger
man play "Dr. Praetorius," it
combines medical theory and
practice, an academic court mar
tial, a weird old law case based on
fact, and a love story which skirts
conventional barriers.
Mupiral Thread
Definitely an adult drama, the
Giraudoux, will be Oct. 26, 27
Nov. 1, 3, 9, and 10.
The play, a satirical comedy in
a whimsical mood, is set in a
sidewalk cafe in Paris, in the
district of Chaillit.
The plot develops from the situ
ation in which the Countess Aur-
eha, the "Madwoman of Chaillot,
played by Beverly Brunton of
Eugene, and three other madwO'
men representing other sections of
Paris, attempt to rescue the mod
ern world from its unsolved prob
lems and evil influences.
The audience is left wondering
just who are the sane in the world
today.
The other three madwomen
are played by Joan De Lap and
Jo Tallman, Eugene, and La Rue
Daniel, Ogdcn, Utah. The play is
in modern sotting but the four
madwomen appear in Victorian
dress in keeping with the spirit
of fantasy of the production.
Ray Fryman of Portland has the
male lead. Dorothy Polanski of
Salem plays Irma. Others in the
cast are Robert Chambers and Fa
ber De Chaine, Portland; Don
Doak, Eugene; Lorin Miller, Coos
Bay; Larry Swanson, La Grande;
and Gordon Howard of Roscburg,
Handling additional minor roles
will be Glenn Mozer, Gerald
Pearce, Eugene; Richard Hiatt, La I
Grande; Jerry Smith, Portland;
and Harold Long, Kennewick,

HOLLYWOOD (JP) Curtis
Bernhardt, a top "woman's direc

the trade, including how to get the
most out of a love scene.
What's a woman's director?
Well, he's a guy who can evoke
fine performances from the heavy
emoters on the distaff side. Bern
hardt doesn't care much for the
title. He argues that he has di
rected many masculine films in
Hollywood and was imported be
cause of some tough, manly pic
tures he made, in France.
But in 11 years here, he has
made noteworthy films with Joan
