Interior Department Receives Funds
WASHINGTON OP) The
Interior Department Wednesday
received the most money $584,
098,797 ever given to it for a
single year's operation.
President Truman signed a bill
appropriating funds to the depart
ment for the fiscal year which
began last July 1.
For the past three months, the
department has been operating
with allowances provided under
special congressional resolutions.
The biggest slice of interior ap
propriations, $354,014,510, goes to
the Reclamation Bureau, with
most of it earmarked for a half
dozen major projects.
These include Davis Dam,
Ariz-Nev., $36,504,860; Central
Valley Project, Cal., $60,789,890;
Colorado-Big Thompson, Colo.
$20,172,750; Hungry Horse, Mont.,
$22,093,125; Columbia Basin,
Wash., $68,000,000; and Missouri
River Basin, $81,668,560.

Strong British Note Scores
Red Poke at West Germany
LONDON (U.R) A British note to Moscow made public late this
week tartly rejected a Russian protest against the formation of a
German government in the American, British and French occupation
zones.
The Western allies had to form the government, the note said,

! it might insure Communist domination of an all-German government.
The British note was dispatched to Moscow Monday in answer
to a Russian protest of Oct. 1. Russia's note was addressed to the
United States and iTance also and inose governments arc especieo
to announce replies soon.
Since the Russian protest, the
Soviet government has set up a
puppet regime of its own in East
ern Germany.
(Acting Secretary of State
James E. Webb made a statement
in Washington last Thursday
which constituted an implicit re
ply to the Russian protest. Webb
said Russia had set up an "op
pressive police state" in Eastern
Germany.)
It is expected that the British
note will serve as a model for
replies to Czechoslovak, Hun
garian and Polish protests against
the formation of a Western gov
ernment. Saying that Britain wanted to
"rebut once move" Soviet charges
that the western governments
wanted to split Germany, the Bri
tish note reminded Russia that
the labor government had "pub
licly stated" Its reluctance to join
in the formation of a German
government without the participa
tion of the Soviet zone.
"But the Soviet government
have consistently refused either to
participate themselves In the ar
rangements wnlch were being
made for the three Western zones
with tho co-operation of their in
habitants or to allow the Germans
in the Eastern zone to participate
In these arrangements," the note
said.
