One of the more recent specials
was a 35-foot rodeo whip for a
Wyoming rancher that took almost
a day to make. Four hours was
required for the braiding job
alone. In 1939, a 65-foot whip was
fashioned for the Ringling Bros.,

tannery using grease, oil and soap
to make the leather going into its

That includes the cutters, braiders,

"String" cutting in which a
razor-sharp knife is used is the
most intricate part of the process
because of the uniform thickness
in which strips must be cut from
the tanned hides.
The plant also produces nose

riding quirts, lanyards, blackjacks
and policemen s billies.

The tract of Douglns-Iir young
growth is located near Kinuston in
Kitsap County, Wash., within the
boundaries of the company's Hood
Canal Tree Farm.
These lands were logged by the
company 65 years ago and now are
in various stages of producing a
second timber crop.
Under the agreement, which an
ticipates a cooperative 20-year
program of forest management
research in silvicultural methods,
wood utilization, practical thinning
procedures, forest . regeneration,
costs and return; the Forest Serv

lay out experimental cuttings on
company lands, analyze results
and report on them. The stand is
similar to others in the Sound re

available to all forest owners.
For the period of thp lease, tim

Provision is made for review of
work plans by the company and
joint consideration of studies that
should be undertaken. This new
field laboratory for young growth

I don't know, how I picked It
up, he says. "I guess it was just a
kid trick. But it didn't go over
with my folks too well after the
first few times so I didn t get much
practice at home."
Severson tells how it used to
be great sport during high school
assemblies to talk right along with
the guest speaker from his seat in
the audience.
"That is. it was sport until the
principal decided to let me sit in
the office whenever we had an as

The first thing that happens
when I start talking along with
him is the quickened interest of
the engineers. They think they re

When Severson was single, wo
men were his favorite victims.
"First they'd get nervous, then
they'd get flustered, then some
would get hysterical until tears
streamed down their face as I
talked along with them. Invariably
they would swear I was reading
their minds. Unfortunately I
couldn't."
Severson claims to have steered
at least four toss-pots back onto
the path of sobriety.
"I'd give them the business when
they were pretty far gone and
you'd be surprised how quickly
they'd swear off at least for that
night," he said. "But then some
times I'll talk along with a drunk
and he'll whirl on the bartender
and accuse him of slipping him a
mickey." -. .
