Three Rivers Garden
Club Has Party and
Annual Flower Show

beauty of flowers and scenery in1
the Hawaiian Islands were shown
at a meeting of Three Rivers Gar
den Club Friday evening, by J. D.
Kern of Camp Creek. Mr, and Mrs.
Ben Pruitt of Thursday were pres
ent and displayed a dry arrange
ment, and a collection of seedling
gladiolus, grown and patented by
themselves.
Cedar boughs and marigolds
were used to decorate the win
dows and doors. Long tables were
placed along the sides of the hall
to hold over two hundred exhibits
of flowers and vegetables. Mrs.
R L. Cooper, Mrs. A. J. Bier and
Mrs .Joe Svatos of Springfield
acted as Judges to award prizes
for best exhibits.
Paul Myers, owner of "Begonia
Gardens" on Camp Creek Road,
showed a large display of begonia
blossoms, and of fuschias, grown
at his .place.
A guessing contest was held in
which the number of beans in a
jar was most nearly computed
by Mrs. A. W. Knox, and a pair of
pillow slips made by Mrs, George
i Fisher was awarded as a prize.
iThe Misses Roberta and Barbara
Fisher were in charge.
Mrs. Fisher was given a ribbon
for the largest number of exhib
its, and a special award went to
Mr. Myers for his begonias. A sat
isfactory sum was realized from
a plant exchange held in connec
tion with the annual flower show.
Refreshments were served at the
close to a crowd of seventy-five
people.

ited a few days at the McClory

Mr. and Mrs. Vearl Ream of
Park Avenue had a four-day trip
to San Francisco last week on
board the Shasta Daylight stream
liner train.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Morse of
Grand Junction, Colorado, left last
week for their home after a month
visit at the home of their daugh
ter, Mrs. Dan Kinnaman on Horn
Lane.
Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Rolph of
Horn Lane have as guests their
friends, Mr. and Mrs. Harold L.
Maxwell and three children of
Seward,, Alaska. Mr. Maxwell,
who is a G.I. veteran employed by
the police department in Seward,
is beginning a three year course in
psychology at the University of
Oregon, where he will specialize
in the study of juvenile delin
quency.

Dunn, of Oakland, Oregon, spent
Sunday at tha home of Mrs.
Dunn's nephew, Alfred E. Heren
decn and family, on Beebe Lane.
Mllo F. Gubrud, 710 River Road,
returned Thursday from a two
month trip to Minot, N. Dak.,
where he transacted business and
built a house for his niece. His
daughter, Arlene, and son, Allen,
who went to North Dakota with
him, returned two weeks ago.
Members of River Road Wom
en's Club are requested to meet
at the clubhouse on Thursday,
September 29, at nine O'clock for
a clean-up session preparatory to
the opening of the regular club
sessions in October. They are to
bring a sack luncheon and coffee
will be furnished.

Quota Hears
Of Changes
Far Ahead
Possibility that civilization on
this hemisphere will vanish in the
face of extreme temperature
changes in a few hundred years
was discussed for Eugene Quota
Club at its dinner meeting, Mon
day evening at the Osburn Hotel,
Dr. Erie L. Klein, physician
from Ohio who is doing graduate
work at the University of Oregon
while recuperating from surgery
caused by war injuries, was the
speaker. He based his talk on ar
ticles by Leonard Reed, scientist,
setting forth theories evolved by
Hugh Auchinloss Brown, a gradu
ate of Columbia University and
expert in engineering and marine
surveying. These men say that
about every 8000 years, artic ice
becomes so heavy that the earth
wobbles on its axis, doing a "par
tial flip-flop" as the speaker
phrased It. He said it has hap
pened before, and cited facts
which bear out the theory that
formerly the equator ran almost
at right angles to its present loca
tion, telling of tropical remains
which have been found In Siberia,
to bear out the statement.
Dr. Klein said that Chinese tra
dition, which goes back more than
8000 years, as contrasted to our
calendar of 7500 years, tells of a
remote time when "the peoples all
had to flee to the far north," be
cause of the extreme cold which
came upon them.
The change should not occur
before 200 to 800 years, the
speaker predicted.
Music on the program was
given by the For-Tune Four, Bar
ber Shop quartet, comprised of
Arthur Campbell, Darold Parks,
Marvin Knutson and William
Hunter. Their songs were "Honey
Gal"; "Coney Island Baby" and
"Sunny Dixie Land."
Dates of the district conference
at Tacoma, Wash., to which Eu
gene Quota Club will send dele
gates, were announced as October
21, 22 and 23. Miss Thelma
Schaefer and Mrs. Leon Year
wood, president, will be the dele
gates, and there will be several
alternates. Mrs. Earl Byrom, dis
trict governor, alio will attend.
Mrs. Ralph Laird is chairman of
nominations for the district, and
Miss Alpha Johnson, co-chairman.
Miss Nina Kitts, vice president,
presided at the dinner.
Gold Star Mothers
Visit Coos Bay
A group of state officers of
Unity Chapter, Gold Star Mothers,
went to Coos Bay over the week
end to assist in tha organization
of a new group to be called Coos
Chapter. Included were Mr, and
Mrs. Ralph Nicholas, Mrs. Carl
Gimpl, Mrs. Elmer Jensen, Mrs.
M. E. Jepson, Mr. and Mrs. Clif
ford Briscoe, Mrs. Grace Winkel
