Reaches Down For A Codfish -Pulls
Out A Dangerous Shark
Mrs. Russell Yockey has a fish
tale that'll stop her ardent an
gling husband's future yarns dead
cold.
The better half caught a shark
with her bare hands!
But It was no ordinary shark
that Mrs. Yockey landed at Lin
coln Beach, just north of New
port Wednesday, and, of course,
it was quite by accident.
While on a deep-sea fishing
junket to Depoe Bay Mrs. Yockey
and the children decided to try
their luck along the beaches while
the men folk put to sea.
Walking along the beach she
saw what she thought was 8 Cod
fish coming in. She grabbed the

Fire at Alaska Junk
Eugene firemen were called out
at 5:09 a.m. Saturday morning to
a fire at the Alaska Junk Co.,
1701 First Ave. W. The blaze
started under a loading platform
in a sawdust pile. The -flames
burned the boards in the platform,
but was extinguished before the
platform was consumed.
Earlier in the morning, a fire
believed to have been caused by
a cigarette, burned some trash at
the base of a telephone pole in an
alley near SO Eighth Ave. W. The
fire orginated in a pile of old
empty sacks stacked against the
pole, firemen said. There was no
damage.
A flue fire at the home of Greta
Elsworth, 340 Eighth Ave. E. at
noon Friday was confined to the
chimney and did no damage.
it upon the beach,
"When I got It there still very
much alive, I saw it's teeth just
like glass and sharp as needles.
Believe me I let it die without
my help after that sight.
"When it was quite dead I took
the fish to the Marine Gardens
and learned that it was a Lan
cet shark a native of tropical
waters and to anyone's knowl
edge never before seen along the
northern Pacific coast", she said.
Mr. Yockey had a terse "no

GAR Commander Theo Penland
Sets Final Encampment Plans
VANCOUVER, Wash. (U.R)
Theodore Augustus Feniana, me
100-vear-old commander of the
Grand Army of the Republic, madei
final plans Friday for a trip to ine
last encamDment of Civil War
veterans from the armies of the
North.
He remarked sadly that there
would not be a bugler remaining
from "the ranks of the boys in
blue" to play taps at the meeting
in Indianapolis, Ind., Aug. 28.
The old soldier said the as
sembly of four survivors would
take place where the original j
grand army formed under Gen.
John A. Logan in 1867 the Clay
pool Hotel.
Fenland will have no succes
sor as commander. He villi head
the GAR until, as he put it, "the
books are closed." All told there
are 17 members alive, but only
fnur will be there.
He was born Jan. 23, 1849 in
Goshen, Ind., the son of a farmer.
He served with the Indiana Volun
teers, principally on picket duties
but he was on the fringe of the
second battle of Bull Run in which
his father was fatally wounded by
a rifle ball.
Were Tounher Then'
'People were tougher then, he
declared. "My father walked three
miles with a hole in his belt-line
before he dropped dead."
Penland attributes his long life
to travel, clean living and walking.
He once walked 1400 miles on
the trail to California after Ap
pomattox.
He enlisted at the illegal age of
16 by writing "18" on a scrap of
paper, wedging it in his shoe and
swearing he was "over 18."
He'll Speak this Time
'I was on the skirts of the
crowd at the first encampment in
Indianapolis, and I didn't hear any
of the speakers," he retlectea.
"This time I'm going to give a
ship-launching speech that I com
posed during the last war."
He recited It without a slip in a
firm, resonant, drill-sergeant's
voice.
It began: "Guide this ship to
victory for America . . ."
Doesn't Plan Marrlare
The spry, bespectacled cente
narian has 12 great-grandchildren
and 19 great-great grandchildren.
He doesn't expect to marry again,
soon. "I'm going to wait a little
while . , . until I get older," he
said.
"And take this down," he
said. "Take this down. A jeep
will never replace an army
mule. You had respect for an
army mule. It could kick."
Then he told of his trip in 1936
to Gettysburg for the unveiling of
a monument, dedicated to both the
Union and Confederate armies.
"After they lit the gas flame
that will burn forever, they
rounded up 800 Boy Scouts and
800 wheelchairs to trundle us off
to the train. I asked my Boy Scout
what it was for. After he told me
I said, 'Get .in son. Let me push
you'."

Truck Owners
Will Expand
The Lane County Truck Own
ers Association at a meeting in
Corvallis Friday evening decided
to enlarge their membership to
include truck owners from Ben
ton County.
It was proposed that the name
of the organization be changed
to Western Oregon Truck Owners
Association subject to approval by
the Lane County membership.
Considerable opposition was ex
pressed against the practice of
excessive fining in the Benton
County area the Association re
ported. It was decided at the
meeting to keep an attorney on
retainer to request a Jury trial
for each truck driver receiving
an overload ticket.
It was announced that a fund
has been started to support the
effort to lower the fine rate. In
formation concerning the fund or
contributions should be mailed to
the Association, Box 775, Eugene.
