People ure do get emotional
about dogs.
Tuesday night the Lane County
Planning Commission, unable to
transact business for want of a
quorum, nevertheless listened to
arguments from two very vocal
points of view.
Dorothy Duree, Ft. 2, Junction
City, president of the Lane Coun
ty Humane Society, wants to
build an animal refuge near the
city limits in the vicinity of
Twenty-third and Chambers.
Carl F. Biu-goyne, 1855 Twenty
third W., a property owner, ob
jected, saying that a large con
centration of dogs and cats in the
neignDorhood would be a noise
nuisance that would Injure prop
erty values.
A petition bearing 74 signatures
agreed with Burgoyne.
; Not that the planning commis
sion could have done anything
about it anyway, because the area
involved i not governed by city
zoning regulations, and it will
probably be late in the fall be
fore hearings can be held an the
question of bringing the area un
der the county zoning ordinance.
The proa and eons wanted a
forum in which to present their
views, and the planners lent them
an ear.
Want Dog Home
The problem came up when
the Humane Society, distressed by
the plight of Lane County'! home
less dogs and cats, sought some
means for providing a refuge for
displaced animals.
A. West Johnson, one-time the
ater owner in Eugene, came to
the society's aid with a grant of
land, 5.8 acres, to be used for an
animaj refuge.
When a number of property
owners in the vicinity pointed out
that they loved dogs, but couldn't
the society consider moving the
project little further out of
town, Mrs. Duree said, "Wa have
no money."
Cant Trade
The terms of Johnson's grant,
said Mrs. Duree, are that the land
be used for as animal refuga, and
apparently for nothing else.
"Not even a trade for other
land a little further out?" asked
the property owners.
"No."
"Then I guess we'll just have
to seek an injunction," said an
other property owner.
Whereupon there developed an
exchange of words that would tug
at the heartstrings of an equity
Judge.
"The trouble with you is that
you Just don't like dogs." -
"I do too like dogs. I just don't
like them in large concentrations
In my front yard."
Then Burgoyne told how his
Tracy Funeral Friday
ESTACADA (U.R) Funeral
services will be held here Friday
for John Harrison Tracy, 78, who
died in a Portland hospital after
spending IS days lost on the
slopes of Mt. Hood.
He died of gangrene, exposure,
and starvation.
wife's asthma was aggravated by
dogs.
"I'm sorry about your wife, and
all that," said Mrs. Dure, "but
we must do something for our
poor animals.
Finally Howard Buford, secre
tary of the commission, suggested
that the interested parties meet
with him a week from Thursday
to sea whether they can prevail
upon Johnson to agree to an ex
change of land.
The planners took no part m
the discussion, but did suggest
afterward that maybe a suitable
compromise could be worked out
Some of the property owners
even offered to Join the Humane
Society and pay dues, anything
tq keep the animal home out of
their immediate neighborhood.
The society has drawings for
an elaborate modern kennel set
up, complete with club house and
landscaped grounds.
Nearly everyone present agreed
the drawings looked nice, but the
freeholders remained firm, a lit
tle further out of town, pleuse.
