(Mass) said after a White House
conference Monday he sees no
prospect for repeal of any of the
wartime excise taxes at this ses
sion of Congress.
McCormack, in addition to his
party post, is a member of the
House Ways and Means Commit
tee which originates tax legisla.

McCormack and other Demo
cratic congressional leaders dis
cussed the tax situation and other
matters at their regular Monday
morning session with President
Truman.
Other conferes were Vice Pres
ident Barkley, Speaker Rayburn
and Senate Majority Leader Lucas.
When Lucas was asked about
the possibility of tax legislation,
ha referred questioners to Mc
Cormack, asserting the matter was
in the jurisdiction of the House
committee.
"Everybody is for repeat," Mc
Cormack said, "but when you
open up the question of repealing
excise taxes, you open up the
question of repealing them all and
raise the possibility of another
$1,700,000,000 loss in revenue.
"You can't lose this much rev
enue without further unbalancing
the budget and without levying
other taxes to replace the excise
taxes."

the flames from spreading to the
rest of the resort, built on 2500
piles driven into the salt and sand
of the lake shore, 13 miles west of
Salt Lake City.
For a time, the glow of the fire
could be seen 20 miles away.
The fire started on the first
hump of the giant racer and wiped
out a 50 foot section of double
track. Firemen blamed it on an
overheated bearing. The resort
had closed before midnight and
the pavilion was almost deserted
when a watchman found the lire.

resulted. Authorities said J. fi.
Grant, 949 Thirteenth Ave. West,
was stabbed In the back before
this fight ended and A. G. Cook,
Cottage Grove, discovered later
that he too had received a back
wound. Both were released af
ter treatment at the Eugene Hospital.
Two other fiehts. one at filv
Cafe, 724 Willamette St., and the
other at the Ace Tavern, 746
North Park St., helped keep city
police busy Saturday night.
