Cain said he has received many
letters expressing disappointment

money in his budget for the dam.
Shock
It was allotted $5,000,000 and
Cain said the amount "was a
shock" as the region had been led
to believe a much larger amount
would be given the project.
He said he intended to appeal
to House and Senate appropria
tions committees to increase the
funds.
"The report that a fault exists
in the region is being spread by
enemies of public power projects,
some of whom appear to be in
federal bureaus," Cain continued.
When hearings were held on
the proposal to authorize the dam
there was intimation that (he rec
lamation bureau wished to con
struct the project but Cain said
that the engineers and the bureau
are working together to promote
projects in the Columbia Basin
and "are doing a good job."
He said he hoped plans can be:

Stalin is "the ablest statesman in
Europe."

"It is useless to go on ignoring
the patent fact that Stalin is ob
viously the ablest statesman in

The aged playwright tossed out
those observations when advised

because of his sympathy for Communism.
Alaska Site

ant Secretary of Interior William
E. Warne said Wednesday that
the Aluminum Corp. of America
is considering building a plant in'
Southeastern Alaska.
"I know that Alcoa has had
under consideration a develop
ment in Southeastern Alaska of
major proportions," Warne said.
He made the disclosure in ans
wer to a question before the Sen
ate Interior Committee which also
heard Warne and James P. Davis,
director of territories, urge speedy
statehood for Alaska.
Chairman Joseph O'Mahoney
asked Warne if Alcoa was con
sidering the expansion because of
Alaskan aluminum deposits or be
cause of the potentialities of cheap
power in the territory. Warne said
power was the sole consideration.
He said a power plant would be
necessary to th operation.

tions.
A decision on whether to hold
' such a meeting was checked to a
1 14-member strategy group at the
party s national committee meet
ing in Omaha, Neb., last week.
But even before the four Sen
ate and House members of the
group have been chosen, law
makers said they don't think the
Republicans in Congress want any
part of the policy conference. The
idea was first suggested by Hugh
D. Scott, Jr., national chairman.
Senator Bridges of New Hamp
shire told a reporter he thinks a
majority of GOP Senate and
House members arc against such
a conference.

AFL Plans
Publicity Bid

radio and motion pictures will be
used by the American Federation
of Labor to promote its organiza
tional and political aims.
The AFL executive council, now
meeting here, will fork out details
of the broad program aimed at he
general public as well as AFL
membership. President William
Green said publication of a week
ly newspaper will begin soon,
with circulation of 1,000,000 at the
start.
Later, he said, the league for
political education will sponsor
five-day-a-week broadcasts over
a national network, and produce
motion pictures for union halls.
The league Is well on its way to
ward a $750,000 goal, Green said.
A chief target of the drive will
be state laws forbidding closed
or union shop contracts. Green
said state campaigns will be made
to eliminate legislators who fail
to support repeal legislation.
Some 75 per cent of labor "will
be freed" by the assured repeal
ot the federal Taft-Hartley Law,
Green told the council, but the
remainder will continue to be af
! fected by state laws deemed antl-
labor.
