Sound Believed Clue

of Pennsylvania have used sound
to disintegrate viruses responsible
for several Infectious human dis
eases. , In experiments conducted at the
Johnson Foundation for Medical
Physics, the viruses were subject
ed to shattering vibrations of
sound. When examined afterward
under an electron microscope,
they were found to have been
broken up into their component
parts and made inactive.
Researchers said breaking up of
the viruses was a necessary step
In studying the causes of such dis
eases as poliomyelitis and influ
enza, and possibly cancer and the
common cold. '
By resolving virus particles into
their component parts, scientists
can investigate the functions of
the various parts and their respec
tive roles in virus multiplication:
The researchers used a sound
generator similar to one used by
the U.S. Navy during the war for
the detection of enemy subma
rines. It produces sound waves vi
brating at a frequency of 9000
times per second.

Too Few Really Charming Men -So
She Starts New Charm School
SEATTLE (U.R) Because the
only real charming men she ever
met were the late President
Roosevelt,' Republican candidate
Thomas E. Dewey and Actor
Frank Morgan, Miss Ada Calvy
decided it was about time there
was a charm school for men.
Packaged charm is being sold
to the American girl in every city
across the nation, she decided,
while her male contemporary still
remains a bumbling, awkward
brute.
Not Enough
"This new line of so-called
masculine perfumes doesn't begin
to answer the problem," she
sniffed.
"Men think it's manly to walk,
Oregon's Car Total
May Hit 447,000
With one passenger car for every
3.4 persons in the state, Oregon
will have approximately 447,000
passenger vehicles registered by
the end of 1948, Oregon State
Motor Assn. officials estimate.
The figure will represent an in
crease of more than 10 per cent
above the 1947 registration of
405,015 cars. There are no"w 431,
670 cars registered in the state.
Estimates for the year's end figure
were based on national trends re
ported by the American Automo-
talk nri smell like a tramp."
So Miss Calvy, five-foot-five
brunette and northwest director
of a well-known women's charm
school, is setting up her own ver
sion of a charm school "for men
only."
And the fact that there were so

Calvy'i decision.
Just As Bad
"Nonsense!", she said. "In New
York they're just as bad. Los
Angeles is no better. Only Frank
Morgan comes up to snuff.
She met the late president and
thought he was the "most charm
ing man I've ever met."
Governor Dewey rates "real
nice" in her book.
But outside those favored few,
she says, the opfnion of the aver
age American woman about the
average American man is low in
deed where charm is concerned.
"Most men lack the basic funda
mentals of charm." she says. "And
yet they're mystified when they
fail to Impress a woman with their
"clever line. "
Let's Be Blunt
"To most women, the ear im
presses much less than the eye and
nose ... if you want the blunt
facts."
To her student applicants, which
already number a long list from
fuzzy-cheeked high school stu
dents to tongue-tied middle-aged
bachelors, she offers a nine-point
'starter ' course that sounds some-

Famed Actress
Dies at Age 43
KINGSTON, N.Y. UP) Elissa
Landi, Italian-born actress and
novelist, died of cancer Thursday
at the age of 43.
Miss Landi, reportedly the
grand-daughter of Empress Eliza
beth of Austria, died in Kingston
Hospital, where she had been a
patient for the past 10 days. Her
illness previously had been de
scribed by her physician only as a'
"chronic condition."
Never Knew
Dr. Kenneth Lefever, who an
nounced the cause of death, said
the actress "never knew she had i
cancer."
Her condition, however, had
been known to her family for nine
months,' he said.
He said that her husband, Cur
tis Thomas, who was with her
when she died, "had done a won
derful job in keeping it from her."
Miss Landi was an artist of
multiple facets, equally successful
as motion picture and stage star,
"as a novelist, as a linguist, as a
pianist and as a singer.
Wins Acclaim
Her varied talents, combined
with a subtle blonde beauty, won,
her praise from both dramatic
and literary critics of a half doz
en nations.
She was born Dec. 6, 1904, In
Venice, Italy, the daughter of
Austrian Count and Countess
Z?nardi-Landi,
She reputedly was the grand
daughter of Empress Elizabeth of
Austria, but with a reticence rare
in actresses she always refused to
confirm or dny her. royal ances
try. American Films
Her stages successes in London
and New York quickly brought
her to the attention of Hollywood
and she made her first American

Iodine Effective A
LOS . ANGELES (U.R) Radio
active iodine is a cheap and ef
fective substitute for goiter oper
ations, the American College of
surgeons learned this week.
Dr. Myron Prinzmetal of Cedars
of Lebanon Hospital here describ
ed treatment of more than 100
patients. He said goiters dis
appear three or four months after ,
patients took tiny doses of radio-
active material from the atomic
pile at Oak Ridgt, Ttnn. I
The dose Is swallowed In a glass
of water, eliminating loss of time, '
scars and complications of surgery, (
Prinzmetal said. He said the
doctor may have to Increase dos
age for several months to find the
right size.
Earlier, three Harvard Univer
sity doctors described how they
produced artificial respiration In
dogs, cats and monkeys oy sending
an electric current through nerves
controlling breathing.
Drs. Stanley J. Sarnoff, I.
Hardenbergh and J. L. Whitten
berger said the artificial breathing
worked for as long as 22 hours.
